Little G has been waking up early every morning to see whether the snow has been and each morning she has been bitterly disappointed. I think they must have been talking about it in school as I haven’t particularly hyped it up at home- to be honest I didn’t think it would come. I’ve seen everyone else posting photos on IG and FB and I have felt a pang of jealousy, who doesn’t want to build a snowman?
Yesterday morning, at 6.30am she ran in yelling mummy it has snowed over and over again and being the big kid I am I hopped out of bed to see what the fuss was about. Sure enough there was a sprinkling of snow on the ground, not enough to make a snowman but enough to stomp around and have a mini snowball fight.
We had already made plans to go to the cinema to see Inside Out with my sister, so snowmen and snowballs would have to wait. If you haven’t seen the film, you really should- it is fab! It has left quite the impression on me actually and maybe that is why the events of the day happened the way they did, who knows?
We got home a couple of hours later to find the snow had melted in our front garden. I assured Little G that there would probably be plenty out the back but unfortunately all of the snow had melted, not even the tiniest amount to satisfy her needs. I was just about to tell her to take off her coat when she hung her head and cried, a real cry, one that breaks your heart.
There are times I when I will tell her to buck her ideas up, to get over it and let’s do something else. But snow doesn’t come often and when you are 4 years old it is a big deal. I cannot stand it when she cries and so with a wipe of her tears I told her it would be ok- we would go on a snow hunt.
I’m not sure how far I would have driven but thankfully we found some playing fields nearby that still had a little snow left on the ground. A huge relief I can tell you! We had the place to ourselves and luckily someone had already started a snowman for us- just as well really as there wasn’t enough to start our own.
Her alien snowman
For half an hour she ran, she jumped, she gathered, she made. We had a snowball fight and most importantly we laughed. To hear her giggling away as she gathered enough snow to throw a snowball at my head made the fact my hands were turning to ice completely worth it.
I could have said no, I could have said never mind, but instead we created memories and that is what it is all about isn’t it?

I love this post. I am guilty of saying no too often but i think it is really important to try and say yes to this type of thing as much as possible.
Also I love Inside Out too! xx

I think many of us say no without thinking but sometimes a yes can be so so worth it. x

Kate I often think this, its so easy to say no sometimes, but actually when it is something like this why not say yes and create a lovely memory. Just stopping for 10 mins and doing something can make the boys day. So I do try to think before saying no, you totally did the right thing look at her little face she is so happy x

I love this post Katy, this is totally what making memories are all about. I love that you drove to find snow! Inside Out is a film I love, I think it brilliant to show children how to understand their emotions, and maybe understand our own too. Lizzie xo
