Creating Beautiful Stairs

I am on a mission to make my house beautiful. If you had seen it when we first moved in, you quite honestly wouldn’t believe your eyes it was so awful. 2 years in and we are well on the way to having the home we want- somewhere clean, fresh and homely.

Our latest project has been the hall, stairs and landing- I say ‘our’ but actually it has been Mr F’s baby. He decided to rip out the old staircase and build a new one from scratch, no mean feat I can tell you! It has taken months of sawing, chiseling and sanding but he is almost there. This is where I have stepped in, to make all the final decisions to tie it all in with the ‘look’ of the rest of the house.

The original plan was to replace the carpet on the stairs with a similar style, nothing exciting just a beige, hard wearing pile that will last us for years. However, when we took up the old carpet we were pleasantly surprised to find a decent set of stairs underneath! It seemed such a shame to cover them up again so we had the bright idea to put a runner up the centre instead!

My only worry was the fact we have laminate flooring on the landing and in the hall- I wasn’t sure that we would be able to fit the carpet without it joining up to anything at either end. Last weekend we went down to Carpetright to see if that was something we would be able to do and they said yes! So, I am back to feeling excited by the prospect of having a feature staircase- it will compliment the new banister perfectly!

Now we have to decide what colour, do we stick with beige or go crazy and get some stripes? I also love the look of stair rods, I am going to have to convince Mr F that we truly need them! I have been pinning a few ideas so do check out my Pinterest board!
