A Healthy Chocolate Choice

I have been very strict with sweets with my girls. Little L never has sweets (besides this time her Grandad gave her a whole bag of Jelly Babies!) and Little G only ever has them on a Friday. We never buy crisps or chocolate and as a result lead very healthy lives.

However, being so strict has backfired on me somewhat. Both my girls are great eaters, they eat absolutely everything, which is amazing, but Little G craves the bad foods. She asks whether it is Friday yet at least 3 times a day and whenever we go to Granny’s house she is pestering for treats.

It dawned on me recently that maybe my being strict was pushing her towards the bad foods- after all I know I always want what I can’t have! So I have decided to change my thinking, make treats available within reason. Having them as a treat was making them something to crave and I want to make them part of the ordinary so they are just something in the cupboard, nothing special.

Of course I still want to make sensible choices, I don’t them eating foods that are bad for them. I came across these chocolate bars and they sounded pretty good- a healthier chocolate bar with natural sugars.

Super Treats are made from 100% organic ingredients and contain no refined sugar or stimulants. Something that really sparked my interest was the fact they provide sustained, slow-release energy, which helps keep blood sugar levels stable- something really important in toddlers with hypoglycemia.

Little G really enjoyed eating them and I am now giving her a little bit with her lunch each day. She is not so interested in sweets by Friday and is much happier choosing fruit and healthy snacks throughout the week.

How about you? What is your view on treats?

I am so much more aware of how much sugar we all eat as a family at the moment. We do have chocolate in the house, but I try to offer fruit and cheese & crackers or yoghurt before breaking into the treat box. My son used to ask for it everyday but tends to forget it is there most days now. I'm much more relaxed on the weekend than during the week too. Will look into this chocolate though as would obviously much prefer him to the healthiest possible bars when he does have it.
