Inside: Quick & Easy Homemade Tomato Ketchup Recipe.
There’s something special about making classic condiments from scratch, and this homemade ketchup is no exception. It is rich, with a tangy flavour, and wonderfully easy to prepare—perfect for everything from dipping your french fries to spreading on burgers or hot dogs.
With just a handful of pantry staples, you can create a fresher, tastier alternative to store-bought ketchup that doesn’t contain any nasty preservatives.

Ingredients
- 340 g tomato purée (I use the one by Mutti as it has very little ingredients)
- ¼ cup soft brown sugar
- ¼ cup water
- 2 tablespoons + 1 teaspoon white vinegar (white or apple cider work well)
- 1½ teaspoons salt
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
Method
- Combine Ingredients
Add the tomato purée, soft brown sugar, water, vinegar, salt, and garlic powder to a saucepan. - Simmer
Place the pan over a low heat. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, stirring frequently to help the sugar dissolve and to prevent sticking. - Cook
Continue simmering for about 5–10 minutes until the ketchup thickens slightly and the flavours meld together. - Store
Remove from heat and let cool a little. Pour the ketchup into an airtight container or sterilised jar. - Keep Refrigerated
Store in the fridge, where it will stay fresh with a shelf life of 2–3 weeks.
Tips & Serving Ideas
- For a spicier version, add a pinch of cayenne or smoked paprika.
- A dash of Worcestershire sauce gives extra depth.
- Use as a dip, a marinade base, or spread it on sandwiches and wraps.
Making your own ketchup is a small effort with big rewards—fresher taste and the satisfaction of homemade goodness instead of ultra-processed. Enjoy!
