The Moon – a symbol of femininity
The moon has been a symbol of femininity for thousands of years, with it’s cyclical nature aligning with the average 28-day female cycle.
In ancient times it was believed that a woman would have her period under a new moon, while ovulating under a full moon. Young girls were taught that their cycle was sacred, just as the moon’s cycle is sacred too.
New Moon
Menstruation phase. This is a reflective phase – a time for introspection and solitude. Our bodies are more sensitive during the new moon and so we should lean more heavily on our instinct and intuition.
Crescent Moon
Pre-ovulation phase. The crescent moon is a time for renewal and when we’ll feel more energetic. Thoughts are clearer and emotions are more stable.
Full Moon
Ovulation phase. The full moon is a fertile phase in all aspects of your life and your self-confidence is at its peak.
Waning Moon
Pre-menstruation phase. During the waning moon, energy starts to decrease. It is a time to let go, to reflect on what is not working for us.
The Triple Goddess
The Triple Moon symbol is represented by a waxing moon, full moon, and a waning moon. These, in turn, represent the phases of womanhood: the Maiden, the Mother and the Crone.
- The Maiden – represented by the waxing moon. She is a symbol of youth, new beginnings, and freedom.
- The Mother – represented by the full moon. She symbolises love, fertility, and power.
- The Crone – represented by the waning moon. She embodies both the previous stages but also represents wisdom and acceptance that without death there is no birth.
Just as the moon has it’s phases, a woman will transform throughout her life. Everything in nature is cyclical, from the seasons of the year to the life and death of all living things. The moon beautifully represents this, and shines on us all as a reminder to live by this fact.
