Maximising space through your kitchen design

Open-plan living might be all the rage, but not everyone has the luxury of a sprawling kitchen. Yet you don’t have to feel restricted or inhibited when it comes to designing your dream kitchen. With a clever design approach, even the most cramped room can feel significantly more spacious.

Below, we’ll explain some clever design tricks that can maximise your kitchen space.

  • Choose a compact layout

The layout is the most important part of a successful kitchen design, especially in smaller homes. A spread-out layout with an island in the middle simply won’t work if you’re short on square footage.

Consider using a galley, L-shaped or U-shaped configuration. These layouts position everything within easy reach, minimising wasted floor space and creating a natural workflow.

  • Use vertical space

When floor area is limited, think upwards. Floor-to-ceiling cabinets are your best friend, maximising storage capacity without sacrificing precious countertop real estate.

Floating and open shelving adds a light and airy feel, while closed cabinets with sleek, handle-less finishes create a streamlined look. Don’t forget to utilise the areas above the fridge and oven with additional cabinets for storing less frequently used items.

  • Integrate appliances

Modern appliances can be a game-changer in smaller houses. Take inspiration from luxury fitted kitchens and consider integrating appliances like ovens and dishwashers into your cabinetry, creating a clean and clutter-free aesthetic while freeing up valuable countertop space.

Another tip is to use multi-functional appliances, such as ovens with built-in steamers or microwaves or a combination fridge-freezer that eliminates the need for separate units.

  • Use smart storage

Clutter is the enemy of a small kitchen, so invest in smart storage solutions to keep everything organised and easily accessible. Drawer dividers, pull-out shelves and corner carousels are all fantastic options. Consider pot and pan racks under cabinets or hanging utensil rails to free up drawer space.

Try to keep prioritise items you use regularly in easily accessible areas while storing less frequently used items in higher cabinets or drawers.

  • Brighten things up

Light and airy colour schemes help create the illusion of spaciousness, so opt for white, cream or pale neutrals for your cabinets and countertops. Reflective surfaces like glass splashbacks or polished tiles also help bounce light around the room.

A well-designed kitchen doesn’t need an abundance of square footage to feel spacious. Which of these design tips will you be implementing first?
