Reading is a passion of mine. I have always loved books, delving into Enid Blyton and other tales of adventures from an early age. Being able to transport yourself to another place is so magical, isn’t it?
As a teacher and a parent, I have carried my passion for reading through life and passed it onto the children I have taught and to my own children. I have read thousands of books and taught hundreds of children to read.
To see them pass up the bandings is always such a proud moment.
The thing is, as much as I want to be able to spend every minute quietly reading, snuggled under blankets with my children, life isn’t like that. There are jobs to do, journeys to make, clubs to attend. Life doesn’t slow down enough to give reading the full attention it deserves.
Of course, we read at bedtime and Gracie will read her latest school book, but that is all I seem to manage. Before I can blink, the day has gone and the children are sleeping.
Thankfully, we discovered Reading Eggs back in the summer. One of the best educational apps I have seen and one that has meant both my girls have come on in leaps and bounds over the last few months.
We allow them a little time on their tablets if they wish and more often than not they will choose to play on their Reading Eggs accounts. I love that I can be cooking dinner and they can be learning something new – mum guilt is absolved for the day.
Why we love Reading Eggs and know you will too
Reading Eggs is aimed at children aged 2-13, with a Junior version made specifically for the little ones. We have 2 accounts, Reading Eggs for Gracie and Reading Eggs Junior for Lils – they both love them so much!
The thing I really love about the program is that it tailors the learning specifically to your child with a placement test. It then adapts as the child plays, creating a personalised program just for them.
Gracie has been using Reading Eggs since August and has moved up 4 reading bands at school! Her understanding of text and ability to use voices and expression has improved too, not just her ability to recognise words.
Lil’s confidence has improved with words too, being only 4 she isn’t at the same level as her sister and this is why Reading Eggs Junior is perfect. She is able to listen to stories, play games and learn her sounds easily with bright colours and encouragement from characters. Once she is ready, she can progress into the next level and learn to read words and sentences.
The fact that I am able to check up on their progress is fantastic and shows me that it is worthwhile. I would hate to be encouraging use of an app that added no real value, but Reading Eggs is honestly brilliant and I would recommend it to anyone.
