I am not a tidy person by nature, I would love to be but I am a hoarder and very lazy and this does not bode well for my home. I am however, a lover of systems! Give me a system with rules and I will abide by them whole heartedly. So, to keep my house ship shape I need to have multiple systems in place.
Being a mum means you need to wear many hats, I know it shouldn’t necessarily be a woman’s role but let’s face it- we are pretty damn good at everything, right? We are the cooks, the cleaners, the educators, the menders, the bakers, the gardeners … the list goes on. I honestly don’t mind this, I actually enjoy being in charge of everything!
To run a successful household you need to make sure that everything runs smoothly, that clothes get washed, shopping is done, toys are put away and that everyone has everything they need each day. I thought I would share my tips for keeping the house running like a tight ship so if you are feeling overwhelmed you can take some inspiration for your own home.
Make meal plans. I don’t know how I managed for so long without these! Every Sunday I sit down, plan my meals for the week and add the ingredients to my shopping order. That way I am not standing by the fridge wondering what to make every dinner time!
Have your shopping delivered. Why waste a good couple of hours going to and from the supermarket, loading up the trolley, unloading onto the conveyor belt, packing and then loading into the car only to unload again at home? Get it delivered and save yourself time!
Have a communal wash basket. We used to have a wash basket in each bedroom and it didn’t work. I lost track of washing and someone would run out of clothes. We now have a communal wash basket and everyone puts their clothes in at the end of the day. I now do one wash a day with a mix of everyone’s clothes.
Put clothes away as soon as they are dry. Don’t leave them in an ironing pile, iron what you must (straight away) and put it all away at the end of each day. Another top tip is to fold your t-shirts like this, possibly the best life hack I have ever found!
Have an emergency tidy box. You know when someone rings and says they are popping round and the house looks like a bomb has hit it? Well, a tidy box is an attractive empty box, kept somewhere in your living space. When you get the call, chuck everything in and tidy away later when your guest has gone home!
Make sure everything has a place. Your house will never be tidy if things have nowhere to go. When you pick something up, think about where it belongs- if it doesn’t belong anywhere either get rid or find it a home!
Keep on top of your paperwork. Buy some box files and plastic wallets and have a good sort through your paperwork. Once everything is properly filed it will make your life so much easier when you need to look for something or file another bill.
Have a cleaning schedule. Have a room to tidy each day and stick to it. Of course the kitchen, bathroom and living room will need giving a quick once over each day but by doing a bedroom a day you will eliminate the need for a mass clear up once a week.
I use this schedule:
Make sure you have the tools for the job. Make yourself a cleaning basket with everything you need to tidy each room. That way, when you go to clean your ‘room of the day’ you can take your basket of supplies with you.
Make sure you tidy as you go. It is such a simple concept but one that many people fail to put into action. Don’t make a job for yourself when you can do it now! Put your plate straight in the dishwasher, hang those clothes up now, wipe down the shower after you finish. All very easy and will save you time in the long run.
They are the systems I have in my house and it means my home is clean, tidy and organised at all times*.
What systems do you live by?
