Has your child’s school signed up for Premier League Writing Stars?

Back in March, I introduced you to the exciting new initiative from the Premier League – Primary Stars.

As a teacher, it is one of the most exciting schemes I have seen in a long time and one that I would definitely get behind if I were still working in school full time.

The scheme sees literacy, maths and other core skills, being taught using football as the subject. So many children can relate to sports, with families supporting teams and sports clubs being offered after school, that it makes for a great subject on which to hook their education.

More than 10,000 primary schools have already signed up to Premier League Primary Stars since its launch.

And best of all… it is all free! 

So what is Premier League Writing Stars about?

You may know that National Poetry day was on 29th September this year. This marked the start of a competition from the Premier League, encouraging children to write poems around the theme of resilience. 

The competition is open for ages 5 to 11 and they are encouraging children to use different creative forms to create their poems.

The campaign is backed by names from football and literature, including Frank Lampard OBE, Premier League player and lyricist Yannick Bolasie and Children’s author Lauren Child – you may know her books, Charlie & Lola.

The competition closes on December 22nd 2017, and must be submitted via schools.

So, this is where you need to get involved and make sure your child’s school is signed up to the scheme! Tell a teacher or nominate them yourself over at www.plprimarystars.com.

Simple! 

The winning entries will be published in a limited-edition book. With other prizes including author-led writing workshops and Premier League trophy school visits, as well as winning poems being read aloud by football stars.

The first 1,000 schools that enter the competition will also receive a bespoke ‘Book Bag’.

I am definitely going to make sure Gracie’s school is signed up as she adores writing and she would be so proud if she could be chosen to feature in a book.

It is such a lovely way to encourage writing, for those that may ordinarily struggle to find inspiration. Football is a big part of so many lives that I am sure every child would be able to have a go and have fun while they do it!
