We have always celebrated Halloween, more so now that we have our own children, but we have never seen a town celebrate it as much as Beire Le Chatel in France.
We took the children along to their Halloween festival at the weekend and had such a magical time.
A bit odd, but magical.
The whole town was involved, with lamposts dressed up with ribbons and people’s gates decked out with cobwebs and spiders. It was such a sight!
The girls were dressed up in their Halloween outfits from Next (they have some great ones to choose from this year) and were so excited to see what the festival would be like.
Gracie was proud to have learned some Halloween phrases in her French lessons and was able to say sorcière (witch) and squelette (skeleton) and a few other things too. She’s been learning French in preparation for our visit to see Aby and Ava – very handy to have friends abroad, isn’t it?
We arrived nice and early and found the town quite empty – it seems the French come alive much later in the day compared to us Brits, so we had the town to ourselves.
We spotted some crêpes for sale and well, it would have been rude not to get some, wouldn’t it?
Do you love their face paints? I am so impressed with my own skills haha! They are part of the Halloween range from Snazaroo and I am a bit obsessed with doing it now!
The festival had the cutest little fair rides and the girls had a go on the merry-go-round. It was powered by an old man riding a bike – so quaint!!
The whole day was so much fun, if a little peculiar at times, and we all had a great time. It was really nice to see a glimpse into true French tradition rather than commercialised festivals in the more major of towns and cities.
