Saturday evenings are my favourite time of the week. No, not because of X Factor but because it is when we all sit around our new coffee table and eat Mexican food together. I love it!
A few weekends ago Mr F asked me what I fancied for dinner and I was so bored of everything we’d normally choose. We were in a proper mealtime rut and I wanted to change things, spice up our lives! I wanted something fun and hands on, something that the kids would enjoy and would bring us all together. A few months ago we’d had Mexican food and I’d really enjoyed it, so I decided we would make an evening out of it.
I adore our new coffee table, definitely my favourite piece of furniture I have ever owned and it is the perfect size for the girls to sit around on their little IKEA chairs and for us to sit on cushions. We lit candles, put everything in little dishes and turned off all technology for the evening.
We had soft taco shells and tortilla wraps, mince, rice, and lots of bowls of dips and extra ingredients. Everything was laid out nicely rather than just shoving it on the table – I wanted it to be special, for everyone to know that it was more than just a meal.
The girls enjoyed it and so did we, it was so so nice being together with no distractions. We haven’t laughed so much in so long, it felt as though we were getting to know each other for the first time.
Meals are normally a rushed affair with Wills crying and me having to leave the table to go to him. Not this time, he was beside me happily smiling away the whole time and we sat around laughing and chatting for about 2 hours! The best 2 hours we’ve ever spent together.
Family is everything to me and these evenings are the highlight of my week. Being able to sit around and talk, really talk to each other is something I wish we had started years ago but it is something we are going to carry on doing now.
How often do you sit down and spend quality time with your family?
