Brew Your Own Beer

Mr F has been brewing his own beer for a good few years now, actually he has tried a whole selection of brew your own drinks. His view is that it may take a bit more effort but it works out so much cheaper per pint than if you buy it from the supermarket- he does love to save money!

brew your own

With Fathers’ Day just around the corner I saw that Moonpig were promoting a Brew Your Own Beer Kit (a stout) and thought it would be the perfect gift! I gave it to him early as it actually takes a couple of weeks to ferment so it will be ready in time for the big day.

The kit comes with lots of bits and bobs to get you up and running, although after opening the box we noticed it doesn’t provide sugar or a mesh for straining the oats. Luckily Mr F had these already but if you are thinking of buying it then bear in mind you will have to find these.

DSC_0005The first step was to stew the oats to release the Wort (the liquid left behind). This took an hour so not a quick activity. The house was filled with the aroma, not to my taste but Mr F was excited.

Once it was cooked it needed to be strained, the oats discarded. Hops was then added to the Wort, which was then left to cool before adding the sugar. The whole mixture is now sitting in our garage under a blanket ready for Fathers’ Day when it will be ready to drink!

Have you ever brewed your own?

I am into brewing myself and have been looking for kits like these. I live in the UK though and can't seem to find anything as good as these. Most beer kits here are tins of syrup you mix water with. This looks like proper brewing.

Hope the beer turned out good, the process looks good at least.
