Last week I was very honoured to be invited to speak at Blog Camp Create in London. You will have heard of Blog Camp of course, I attended the Birmingham event a few months ago and had a great time! This was slightly different though as it was a handful of local bloggers hanging out together in a crafty environment.
I was asked to speak about blog design, something I have had success with on my own blog in the last couple of months. Anyone who knew my blog before April will have known my old, very cringey, header. Thankfully a fab friend gave me some very honest feedback and prompted my redesign!
Here are my top tips that I shared with the lovely bloggers at the event:
- Have a clean header- use canva to create your own
- Make sure your header explains your blog- do you need a tagline?
- Have an about me, contact me and a work with me page (or somewhere that brands can find examples of work)
- Is your blog easy to navigate? Can you categorise posts?
- Clean up your sidebar- no unnecessary clutter!
- If you have ads, make sure they aren’t too distracting to the eye
- When writing, have paragraphs to break up the text
- Make sure your photos are large and centred
My traffic increased five times in the month after I redesigned my blog! People are fickle, you may have great content but if your blog design is poor then they will not take you seriously.
The rest of the morning was spent being creative. I made myself a bag with my header design and media buttons on it. I love it!! The Re-Creation Artroom in London was a fab venue!
We also were lucky enough to get some top tips from Mel, from Le Coin De Mel, about Pinterest. If you don’t follow her already you should do as she is awesome! She has inspired me to clean up my Pinterest account and put more effort into my pinnable images!
A big thank you to Lindy and the whole of the TOTs 100 team for inviting me along, it was a great morning!
