Craft Idea: A Plate For Daddy

If you read my blog regularly you will know that both my girls love crafts, they would sit and do crafty activities all day every day if they could – and they often do! With Fathers’ day just around the corner the girls have been on at me to think of something they could make for Mr F. The one thing he needs (besides new socks – how do men get so many holes in their socks??) is a little dish to keep his bits and bobs in. He is always emptying his pockets out and leaving loose change all over his bedside table and my new neat and tidy attitude cannot allow that!

We had some clay (we got it from Baker Ross ages ago) in our craft drawer so we decided to make him a little dish, personalising it especially for him from the girls. It wasn’t the quickest activity as it all had to be done in parts while waiting for it to dry etc.. but they are really happy with the end result and I am sure he will love it, seeing it is from his baby girls.

Messy Me Mat

We are still loving our IKEA table, I don’t know what we did before we had it- we use it for everything!! So lovely for them to be able to work at their own level whether that be for crafts or for cooking. We have a gorgeous new table cloth for it too. I have bought a few different ones in the past but they never come in the right size. We were sent this one from Messy Me and actually it can be used for all sorts, including an under highchair splash-mat, but it is the perfect size for our little table. Of course they love it as it has stars all over it! I love it because it protects the table and is wipe clean 🙂

Making the dish

First job was to make the actual dish. I had to help with this to make sure it was round but other than that they did it themselves. They left finger prints around the edge of the dish as they were folding up the sides and in the end I decided to keep them as a feature, completely hand made 🙂

I then wrote the ‘we’ and ‘daddy’ using a little pencil and left a space for them to make the heart. We love any craft that involved finger prints and so having a little finger print heart using both of their thumbs will make it all the more special.

We Heart Daddy Dish

Painting the dish white

We had to leave the dish to dry out and harden for a few days but then it was ready to paint. We painted it white first to cover up the clay colour and then were able to paint it blue – daddy’s favourite colour.

The finishing touch was to pick out the writing and of course the heart. And voila!! Daddy will now have a dish to keep his pennies in!

  2. What kind of paint did you use? I a relatively new to the whole crafting thing and don’t want to end up using the wrong paint. Thank you! This is just the most adorable idea!

I just went to look at the paints – the bottle just says ready mix paint and that it is washable. It came from Hobbycraft though in their kids setion, nothing clay specific if that makes sense. Ive just added in the link to the clay we used, it was from Baker Ross and can be found here: 🙂
