I started this feature to celebrate real mums. Mums are amazing and come in all shapes and sizes but sometimes we can feel alone, we can feel as though we are the only ones struggling to keep on top of things. I want to lift the lid on motherhood so we can all feel part of a sisterhood, to feel proud about our own achievements and know that we are doing the best we can!
Without further a do let me hand over to Beth!
Tell us a little bit about yourself and your family.
I’m Beth. I’m almost 30 and live in Shropshire with my husband and three children; my 6 year old son Charlie and 2 year old identical twin girls P1 and P2. I’m a SAHM after opting for voluntary redundancy whilst on maternity leave.
Describe a typical day in your life
School runs dominate our days! It’s lovely to have time with the girls as we are on the one year countdown to them starting nursery so we love playing outside and visiting friends. In the evening, we all eat together and usually read and practise spellings. But the highlight of every day is the post bath cuddle on the sofa usually whilst watching In The Night Garden.
What is the best thing about being a mum?
I love that no matter what these three little people who lived in my tummy can make me smile when I’m having a bad day. When I have greasy hair, no make up on in my pjs they think I’m the most wonderful person in the world and I adore hearing them call me Mom. I feel incredibly lucky to be a SAHM and share so many moments with them all.
What have you found hardest about motherhood?
I have found it hard to split my time equally. I have recently started to make a conscious effort to do more solo activities with Charlie as the girls need a lot more attention and help so I fear he is feeling a bit pushed out although he never says it. As the girls get older I too will be dedicating certain days in the month for 1 on 1.
How has your body changed?
After having Charlie you never would have known I had ever been pregnant – yes I was one of those annoying people! But after having twins with a combined weight of 13lbs1oz not to mention a whopping placenta and two sacs with two sets of water it was inevitable that my tummy wouldn’t go back as it was! I am struggling with my weight and I feel very self conscious about it all which is rather sad.
Do you wear makeup? If so what does your routine look like?
Day to day I usually stick on a quick coat of mascara and my bare minerals foundation. I have very bad skin so I don’t like my skin with no product covering up but it takes literally minutes.
What’s in your handbag?
I never use a handbag! If I am going out I’ll pack up a changing bag and probably stick in my phone, keys and purse. I travel light!!
What is your relationship with housework?
I am rubbish! I hate putting clothes away with a passion. My house is messy but not dirty – with three kids it is far from a show home but I accept it and like my Dad always says – you’ll miss it one day!!
How do you relax?
I love to blog and catch up on trashy TV that is in the planner. My husband works away most weeks so I can’t go out once they’re in bed so I have to entertain myself.
What’s the best parenting advice you have ever been given?
Trust your gut instinct. And I do – I know my kids better than anyone so I will always take a laid back approach and go with the flow that I feel is best.
For any new mums out there, what would you like to tell them?
You feel like you have to plan everything but take each day as it comes. It’s easy to say you definitely want to co-sleep/breastfeed/have a water birth but if you have an open mind and go with the flow you ease all the unnecessary pressure that we as Mothers pile on ourselves.
What makes you happy?
Seeing the kids playing together and giggling is one of the best feelings. I also love big family gatherings as since losing my Mom, I treasure my extended family even more than I did before.
And finally, complete this sentence:
I am a great mum because….. I learned from the best – miss you Mom xx
I have always found it difficult spreading my time too, now that Little G is going to be at nursery every afternoon I will be able to focus on LJ more. I am sorry you lost your mom, I cannot imagine the pain. xxx
