Inside: 10 Different Types Of Massage. Collaborative post.
Thinking of getting a massage? Before you book a massage, it’s worth considering which type of massage is right for you. Different styles of massage could be more effective at achieving different things from reducing stress to relieving pain. This post delves into 10 different types.

Swedish massage
The most traditional massage you’re likely to come across is the Swedish massage. Most massage therapists will practise this type of massage – it involves using the hands to rub and knead muscles around the body. It can be great at relieving muscle tension and improving blood circulation.
Deep tissue massage
Deep tissue massages can help relieve more serious tension within muscles, as well as targeting trapped nerves and sore joints. On top of using their hands, the massage therapist may use their knuckles and elbows to reach deeper sources of pain.
Pregnancy massage
If you’re experiencing pain and discomfort during pregnancy, a pregnancy massage may be able to help relieve this. Such massages are available all the way up until the third trimester and can target various parts of the body while being careful of your bump.
Reiki massage
Reiki massages are one of the more gentle forms of massage. This massage style from Japan does not involve working muscles or deep tissue, but instead involves transmitting warmth and energy by placing the hands above the body and using soft touches.
Aromatherapy massage
An aromatherapy massage is much like a traditional Swedish massage, but it incorporates scented essential oils. Different scents help to also relax the body, while application of certain oils may even help with pain relief.
Sports massage
Sports massages are typically used to help treat sport injuries or injuries sustained during physical activity. They are more specifically targeted than a traditional massage, focusing on the muscles and joints that are affected by the injury to help relieve pain and inflammation.
Tantric massage
A tantric massage helps to target the whole body – including sexually erogenous zones. Although more erotic in nature, such massages still provide many of the benefits of a regular massage and are still intended as a form of healing.
Hot stone massage
As the name suggests, this unique massage involves using hot stones. The use of heated stones can help to reduce muscle tension and relieve pain. Some people find it to be more effective than a regular massage.
Chiropractic massage
Chiropractic massages are often targeted towards the spine and other joints. They are usually followed by chiropractic adjustments. Such a massage is ideal for those with back pain or joint pain. It must be carried out by a trained chiropractor.
Shiatsu massage
Shiatsu massages are less relaxing and a lot more physical, helping to primarily relieve muscle tension and pain. Shiatsu massage therapists may use the hands, elbow, knees and even feet to provide a massage, while also manipulating various parts of the body.
