Life as a working mum doesn’t exactly come with a pause button. Between school runs, packed lunches, endless laundry, emails, meetings, clubs, appointments, and everything in between, it’s no wonder we sometimes feel like we’re juggling plates on a tightrope. Any gadget that gives back a bit of time, headspace, or peace of mind? Sign me up.
Over the past year, I’ve slowly built up a collection of smart little tools that genuinely make life easier – whether it’s keeping tabs on the dog, streamlining the morning rush, or just making sure I don’t forget bin day again. Here are a few of my current favourites.
1. GPS Tracker for Dogs
Let’s start with Barney. He’s our lovable, slightly bonkers dog with a knack for slipping through the garden gate if it isn’t shut just right. I used to worry constantly when I wasn’t at home – had he got out again? Were the kids panicking?
Now we’ve got this GPS tracker for dogs, and honestly, it’s been a total game changer. It clips onto his collar, doesn’t bother him in the slightest, and gives us real-time updates via the app. The virtual fence feature alerts me if he strays too far, and the battery lasts for days. Whether I’m stuck in traffic or halfway down the supermarket aisle, I know exactly where he is. Total peace of mind.
2. Smart Home Assistants
I was sceptical at first, but our Google Nest Hub has become a lifesaver. It reminds us when it’s time to leave, what’s on the calendar, and even plays calming music in the evenings when everyone’s a bit wound up. I use voice commands constantly – for timers, weather checks, or even asking what I can cook with three random ingredients. It’s like having an extra pair of hands (that never moans).
3. Robot Vacuum Cleaner
I cannot overstate how satisfying it is to come downstairs to crumb-free floors without lifting a finger. Our robot vacuum whirrs around in the early hours and handles the mess that mysteriously appears overnight (usually thanks to the kids and the dog). It’s not perfect, but it’s good enough, and that’s all I need most days.
4. Wireless Label Maker
Okay, hear me out. This one’s not as fancy, but it’s been brilliant for getting things organised – lunchboxes, toy bins, cables, school folders, everything. You can even print labels from your phone. It’s one of those random things you never knew you needed until it saves you from yet another “Muuuum, where’s my…” moment.
5. Smart Plugs and Timers
These are absolute gold for automating lamps, chargers, or even slow cookers. I’ve set things to turn on and off at certain times so I don’t have to think about it. It’s brilliant for energy saving too – no more leaving the dehumidifier running for six hours by accident.
Of course, none of these will make the chaos disappear completely (if only), but they’ve each taken the edge off in different ways. And when you’re spinning a dozen plates at once, even small wins matter.
