Teaching Shape And Colour

I love my job, I really do, being able to mould a child’s mind is just such a privilege. The fact that I have two of my own children means I get to mould their minds too and I really enjoy it- knowing that I am the one to teach them new things and give them opportunities to learn new skills is so rewarding.

I have to say though I have always struggled with the very early years. My forte is with 4 years plus, so babies have always been a challenge! I was fortunate that Little G was ahead of her years so I could teach her earlier than usual. She was talking from very early on and grasped everything really quickly.

LJ is a completely different case, she is yet to speak properly and hasn’t grasped things like colours or shape. I don’t know if it is just how it is or whether as the second child I have let her down a bit, but either way I need to buck my ideas up! Now that her sister will be at Nursery 5 days a week I need to give her more one to one time!

Fisher Price kindly sent us two fantastic toys to help LJ with her shapes and colours. The first is a little backpack- so cute with the crayons on the front.

She was immediately drawn to the buttons, each one having a different function depending on age and development level. I have started her off on the basic level which says a colour for each crayon and she loves it- the perfect baby learning toy!

To be honest she is more interested in pressing the buttons to make the songs play but hopefully with a little encouragement I can get her to understand the names of each colour. She will then be able to move onto the 2nd stage which includes shape. Once she is ready I will move it along to the final stage although with her sister around it will probably be on that sooner rather than later!

The bag comes with a little book and a toy apple, she loves popping them in and out of the bag – she is really into pretend play at the moment so it is perfect!

The second thing they sent was this awesome baby ride on scooter. When the box arrived she knew it was for her and was hopping from foot to foot telling me to open it! Of course we had to go out on it straight away, up and down the pavement outside our house, you can see the concentration on her face!

It is such a lovely toy, playing sound effects when she pushes herself along! She was pleased as punch!

Each button has a different function and encourages her to learn shapes. Once again there are different stages so once she can recognise them she can move onto the 2nd and 3rd stages where she can match shapes.

She is bright as a button so i don’t think it will be long before she picks these things up, I just need to make sure she has every opportunity to learn!
