Buying Christmas presents can be extremely tricky for a lot of people. You likely want to buy something somewhat original and thoughtful, but it’s so easy to slip into common patterns, buying the same things year in and year out. If you’re already thinking about what to get for your loved ones for Christmas, then at least you have time on your side – read on for a few ideas that you might not have thought of before.
Buy them a star
If you want to get someone a gift this Christmas that’s both incredibly special and somewhat outside the box, then why not buy them a star? No, we don’t mean that the recipient will technically own a ball of radiation somewhere out there in the universe, but you can name a star after them. This could be a great idea for someone who doesn’t really need any more physical things in their life, no matter how young or old they are.
Make them something
Unless you know someone is struggling and needs help with something in particular, gifts shouldn’t be about practicality – they’re a chance to show the recipient that you care enough about them to put time and effort into choosing a present.
As a result, if you think that the recipient would appreciate it, you could consider making them something. If you already have a skill under your belt that could facilitate that – woodworking skills, for example – that’s great. If not, you can still try to work it out on the trot, especially with the whole internet at your disposal.
Subscription gifts
They’re not exactly new anymore, but a lot of people seem to forget about subscription-based gifts when buying Christmas presents. We’re not talking about getting a Spotify or Netflix subscription here – there are a range of much more fun options, from subscriptions for fancy t-shirts to monthly deliveries of different houseplants.
What ties all of these together is that they’re literally gifts that keep on giving – the recipient doesn’t just get something once, they get the surprise of a new item being delivered on their doorstep month in, month out.
A good book
Books as gifts have definitely fallen out of vogue in recent years. Few people make the time to read anymore, and it can be difficult to buy a book that really matches someone’s literary preferences. That being said, we think it’s definitely time that books as gifts make a comeback.
Falling in love with a good book is an incredible experience, and can really help to create space for some much-needed downtime. Take your time to think about what the recipient might like, and don’t rush into the first book you find. Book buying is an art, and it deserves your care and attention.
