Now that the buds and leaves are returning to the trees it’s the perfect time to be getting out and about in nature once again. All around the UK, there are many wonderful natural spots to enjoy a weekend break.
If you’re looking to get away from the noise and bustle of urban life, then escaping to one of the UK’s expansive woodlands is a great plan. Enjoy a truly tranquil few days beneath the branches, letting the sounds and sights of nature carry your worries away.

Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire
When it comes to woodland fame, this one’s at the top of the list. The story of Robin Hood and his home in Sherwood Forest is known around the world, not least for the many film adaptations that have been shot here!
While you won’t be encountering any legendary archers on your visit, Sherwood Forest is still a wonderful destination for any nature lover. Majestic oak trees offer the perfect setting for long walks beneath the canopy, with the dappled sunlight filtering in through the dense leaves to illuminate the forest floor.
If you’re looking for the second most famous resident of Sherwood, make a trip to the Major Oak, which has stood since the time of the Vikings. It’s one of the largest oak trees in the country, and definitely worth a photo op.
Puzzlewood, Gloucestershire
Speaking of popular culture, Puzzlewood has played host to quite a few films and TV shows in its time. From Star Wars to Doctor Who, this ancient woodland within the Forest of Dean has attracted plenty of cameras – and it’s not hard to see why.
The woods are a unique labyrinth of moss-covered rocks and twisted tree roots, which create an almost otherworldly atmosphere as you wander its pathways. Even if you’re not looking to create your own fantasy backdrop, you’ll find plenty of stunning spots to photograph while you’re in the Puzzlewood.
Home to a variety of wildlife, from deer to foxes and bats, the Puzzlewood is a perfect location for reconnecting with nature. And, once you’ve explored these woods, the rest of the Forest of Dean and its many sights are easily accessible.
The New Forest, Hampshire
Last, but by no means least, the New Forest is quite possibly the most impressive woodland in the entire UK. These ancient woods and heathlands were named as William the Conqueror’s ‘new hunting forest’ in 1079 and have been left largely unchanged since then.
Here you’ll see trees that have stood for hundreds of years, creating an atmosphere unlike anything you find elsewhere. With 5000 wild ponies roaming the lands, in addition to deer, donkeys and pigs, there’s an abundance of wildlife to look out for on any excursions.
The New Forest is not just trees, though, with expansive grassy plains and heathlands to explore and enjoy as well. From horseback rides across the landscape to historic houses and gardens, there’s a wealth of places to visit and activities to enjoy. So much so that you’ll almost certainly have to come back again to even scratch the surface!
There are wonderful woodlands just waiting to be explored all around the UK. Whether you head to the legend-steeped Sherwood Forest or choose the timeless expanse of the New Forest, enjoy a return to nature on your next weekend break.
