Setting up the system
Inside the box is an instruction booklet which guides you through the installation process. The first step is to get the camera mounted and secured where you’d like it to be, either doing so yourself or having a qualified electrician do the job.
The camera can either replace an existing light fitting or be placed in a new position with a new power cable, securing it to the wall with the supplied mounting bracket. It is a good idea to check the wifi signal for your chosen area to make sure you will be able to connect the camera to your home wifi.
Once the camera is connected to power and securely in place, you can begin the set-up process using the Netatmo Security app. If you don’t already have an account then you will need to create a login before continuing, but once you are logged in you simply need to work through the steps.
Choose ‘Smart Outdoor Camera’ from the various products listed and follow the prompts to connect the camera to your home wifi system. While the app searches for your camera the light should flash on and off until it is discovered. You’ll then see that your ‘Natatmo Presence’ is ready to connect to your home.
You will have a small card inside the box with a QR code to use when prompted. This will connect your camera to your Homekit, allowing you to use your phone and other smart devices to control the system.
And that is it, you’ll now be connected and you’ll be able to watch the live video feed from your phone.

The app allows you to watch video footage, control your camera and change any settings as you require.
One of the changes we made was to lessen the intensity of the floodlight as we don’t need it to reach as far as it can do at full beam. We also made sure that the smart light only turns on when a person is detected, turning off the options for cars, animals and any other motion.
The great thing about having a camera connected to an app is the fact that you get real-time notifications. So if you are away from home you can monitor any comings or goings and have peace of mind that your home is secure.
You can also choose to have the video feed record certain movements, so if you’d like it to record people coming onto the property then simply toggle the button. You can also set the length of time that the recorded video feed will be stored, so that any important footage can be captured before being deleted.
And the best bit is that there is no subscription needed – the app updates automatically so the camera is always up to date.
Our experience
Having moved to a new area and now living on quite a busy road, we are definitely feeling more protected having a camera in place. Not that we feel that we are necessarily at risk but you just never know who could be watching the house and our movements.
In the short term though, it has been so handy having a way of monitoring movements when we aren’t at home. Just yesterday a delivery driver chucked a parcel over our gate and left without posting a card through the door to alert me to the delivery. So instead of me finding the parcel days later by chance, I was able to see that he had walked to the door and knew exactly what he had done.
Having a camera and being able to access the feed at any time has just given us control over our home and that is definitely something everyone needs.
