Inspiration from Blogcamp - What Katy Said

Inspiration from Blogcamp

I love learning, I am forever trying to better myself and blogging is no different for me. I love to find out new tips and tricks and improve the way I blog every day. Last week I was fortunate enough to grab a ticket to Blogcamp at the last hour, so I hopped on a train to Birmingham to see what the day would bring.

blogcampWith 3 inspirational ladies, Aby (You Baby Me Mummy), Leigh (Headspace Perspective) and Vicki (Honest Mum).

Lots of bloggers have written about the day already so you probably know what much of the day was about and the fun that was had. There were great speakers and I learned such a lot in a short space of time, I could have listened to them for hours! As a result it has taken me a week to get around to writing my roundup of the day as I wanted to implement everything I learned first and then reflect on it all.

Here are the different topics and how I have implemented the advice given.

CONFIDENCE I have to say the stand out speaker of the day for me was Vicki of Honest Mum. I am sure you have read her blog so know that she oozes confidence in every word, but in person she was truly an inspiration. She didn’t specifically talk about confidence but the way she promotes herself made me take a long hard look at the way I write and the way I promote my own blog.

What have I done?

I have been adding in sprinkles of confidence into some of my latest posts but the main change has been the shift in my attitude. When I write a post I write with confidence and believe in myself!

YOUTUBE I have my own Youtube channel but have made no effort whatsoever to make the site user friendly or visually appealing. Sian from Helpful Mum shared so many great tips to help get your channel to its best!

  • Have a short welcome video to welcome new followers
  • Promote videos within the first 48 hours for them to do well.
  • Organise your videos into playlists
  • Add featured channels that you like to your sidebar
  • Use end slates to encourage subscriptions
  • Make your own thumbnails- these are what people see before watching your video so need to look great!

What have I done?

I came home and immediately made myself some playlists to organise all of my videos. I have been thinking about my channel introduction video too, just need to get around to filming it! What I really need to do is remember to film! Sounds silly but I am so in the habit of taking photos I forget I can use video too! I have just been tagged in a vlog meme so keep an eye out for that!!

BEING CAMERA READY This leads on nicely from Youtube as to have a great channel you need to be confident in front of the camera. Vicki spoke about her work and shared her tips for being camera ready:

  • Shoot with a clear background- no mess or clutter to distract from the main subject- you!
  • Invest in a good camera! I have heard so many good things about GoPros and really want one!
  • Makeup- go a little bit more dramatic than you usually would as you don’t want to appear pale or washed out!
  • Fake confidence- pretend you are talking to your best friend.
  • Have an ‘On Camera’ page on your blog showcasing any videos you have done.

What have I done?

I went home and immediately made myself an ‘On Camera’ page and added in the films I have featured in so far. Hopefully I can add to that page with other campaigns in the future! Must remember to smile when I film the meme!

FASHION I have always loved fashion and listening to Kat and Christina talk about their fashion blogs made me want to write more fashion related posts. They spoke about the different ways to arrange your clothes and the different ways you can get a selfie.

  • Showcase your uniqueness.
  • When you buy something, take a photo and tag the brand on social media- they will notice you!
  • Don’t be afraid to invite yourself to PR events.
  • Pretend you are a tourist when taking a photo of yourself in public.
  • If you can’t get someone to take your photo and don’t have a tripod then get a long mirror and do a selfie!

What have I done?

Well, so far not much although I did buy a leather jacket the other day- am yet to tag the brand though! To write fashion posts you need to have beautiful clothes and that is something I am lacking really. This is going to have to sit on the back burner for now.

WORKING WITH BRANDS All bloggers love working with brands and so everyone was very interested to hear advice from PRs and Pro Bloggers. The main message was that to make yourself standout you need to be friendly- remember that prs are human too!

  • Always reply to an email, even if it just a press release
  • Always be polite.
  • Remember, PRs move around from brand to brand so it pays to keep in with them.
  • Be unique, offer them something new and exciting
  • Talk a little about your blog in the email as well as sending a media pack
  • Contact PRs you have worked with every couple of months to refresh their memories

What have I done?

I have been much more creative in the way I reply to emails. Even when a brand has approached me I reply with an idea for a post so that I stand out above anyone else they may have contacted.

PRO BLOGGING This was such a great talk and by the end Becky had me in tears as she told us how thankful she is to blogging for all of the opportunities it has brought her and her family. Penny told us all about how she now gets paid to write on her blog- which was bought by Wayfair. They were both really lovely and shared their tips for becoming a pro blogger:

  • Time blocking is great for organising your time. When someone approaches you, look where you can fit in a time to write the post/ take photos etc..
  • Produce a great media pack
  • Join a tribe, give each other feedback and set goals
  • Comment on posts of brands you would like to work with
  • Reach out using Response Source
  • Have faith in yourself
  • Collect tesimonials

What have I done?

I was brave and asked for a testimonial from a pr I worked with and have generally been having my business hat on when I reply to emails. I always makes sure I comment on posts of brands I like but have been keeping an eye out for more. I also used Response source again (last used it for Valentine’s Day) and had just over 50 emails! Win!

All in all I thoroughly enjoyed the day and came away feeling like I can do this! Believing in yourself is half the battle and some days I do struggle. But then I just remember that for the most part I am dealing with people through my laptop so I can put on my brave face and pretend I am the best, the brands won’t know I am actually a quivering mess and hopefully they will love me!

My favourite part was meeting up with blogging friends, the online community is so amazing and when it comes together in reality it can be so much fun! All those creative minds meeting in one place, great things are always going to happen!

Great post, thank you for sharing all these tips. I’d love to make it to a conference one day but with a full time job and two little ones I’m not sure my stay at home husband will sanction the time away……maybe next year.

I can definitely impliment some of the strategies you have outlined though.

    Thank 🙂 #TheList

Wow, sounds like Blogcamp was really interesting – and like I have still so much to learn! I’m fairly new to blogging and really want to develop it, as I absolutely love it, but with a full time job and two kiddies I sometimes struggle to find the time, so it’s step by step for me. The above was very useful and interesting, though I have to google things like Response Source. 😉 Thanks for the tips and the summary for all that couldn’t be there! x

This is a lovely account to read Katy. I’ve never been to a blogcamp and wanted to get to this one but couldn’t manage it, I’m feeling much better about trying other conferences coming up though now and hopefully I’ll make this one one next year too. What I’m wondering is what to take though – notepad and pen/laptop? Any tips? x

I took a pad and pen and a phone charger and that did me. 🙂 Just be confident and smile and you will be fine xx
