If you have a special needs child, there’s no denying that it will probably change your life. That’s because special needs kids have different requirements from a child who does not fall into this category. You will need to look into the kind of special requirements your child has before figuring out how you can help them.
That usually starts with you reading books or getting information through other means about your child’s condition. It might involve understanding HIE and its impact if that’s what’s going on with your young one. If your child has some other condition that you knew very little about, you should try to absorb all the information you can.

In this article, we’ll talk about ways that your life will likely change once you have a special needs child.
What Does “Special Needs” Mean?
First, let’s briefly define the term “special needs” to be sure that you understand what we mean when we use it. Special needs mean any one of a number of physical or mental conditions where your child needs some extra help. They’re differently abled, sometimes due to a condition they had at birth, or sometimes due to an illness or injury afterward.
You might have a child in a wheelchair. You could call that a special needs situation. If your child has a mental or psychological limitation, then that also makes them a special needs person.
One Parent May Need to Stay Home with the Child
If you have a spouse or a partner with whom you coparent, then you will need to have some conversations with them when you determine that you have a special needs child who you’re going to raise. If you’re parenting on your own, then you can still provide a good life for the child, but it’s generally easier with two people.
One of you may need to stay home with the child. You’d have to do this anyway with an infant, but with a special needs child, one of you may have to be there with them much more than you would if you didn’t have a child with special needs.
That might mean that one of you will have shelve your career, or at least dial back some plans that you had for it. Maybe you can still do some things related to your career from home. That depends on your niche or industry.
You Need to Figure Out Whether You Can Home School the Child
You will need to figure out if one of you will need to home school your child. That supposes that they have a mental infirmity or condition that makes it difficult for them to learn at a more conventional pace.
If that is the case, then you will need to determine whether one of you can realistically do the job. Home schooling takes a great deal of patience. It is not easy, but if that’s what you need to do to make sure that your child gets a quality education, then you may have little choice in the matter.
You’ll Determine Whether You Must Structurally Alter Your Home
You will need to figure out whether you need to do anything to alter your home so that it can more easily accommodate your special needs child. For instance, maybe you have a child in a wheelchair. You will probably need to retrofit your home with ramps.
You may need to make additional home alterations. That might involve putting a lift on the stairs so that your child can more easily go up and down when they get a little older. You may need to have a stool or additional support bars in the tub to help with bathing.
You Must Think About What Your Child’s Life Will Look Like as an Adult
As your special needs child grows, you must also think about what their life will resemble as they get older. You should think about whether they can move out on their own when they’re of legal age.
If they can’t, then they may have to stay with you, even during their adult life. If that’s not possible or practical, then you may have to look into a form of group housing. You must pay to have your adult child live in some of these facilities, but others have government or private funding.
The child’s specific condition will determine which of these actions you must take.
