Inside: How to Avoid Burnout. Collaborative post.
Burnout is an extreme form of stress that can cause physical and mental exhaustion and a feeling like you don’t know who you are anymore. In the fast-paced modern world where we always have so much to do and see, it is a really common complaint and it can be very distressing for those who suffer from it.
If you are someone who is always up and about keeping busy, whether running your own business, taking care of the kids, or working on personal passion projects, then you might be at an increased risk of burnout.
The good news is, there are lots of things you can do to avoid burnout and protect your mental wellness, including the following:
Don’t push yourself too hard
You might be tempted to spend all of your waking hours being productive doing things you need to do, whether it be building your business or cleaning your home, but you need to ensure that you have some time free where you can rest and recuperate from all of that hard working from time to time.
Pushing yourself harder might be tempting if there is something important you want to achieve, but the more you work and the harder you work, the more likely it is you will get stressed out and burn out, and this will only set you back on the road to achieving your goals.
This is especially important for professionals considering medical work abroad, where maintaining both mental and physical well-being is essential for delivering quality care. Stop pushing so hard, and build in some time out to relax and do something fun each day.
Make sure you have hobbies and interests
You might be working hard to ensure you can make as much money as possible for your family or you might be burning the candles at both ends to establish your own business to build a better financial future.
But that shouldn’t be all you do If you want to avoid burning out, then you really do need to find a hobby or interest that you can do in your sparrow time – and you should ensure you have some spare time so that your focus is not always on work or chores or the things we all have to do, but on something you actively enjoy, and which makes you feel calm and happy while you do it.
Learn to meditate
A lot of people think that meditation is this hippie-duppy thing that only lazy navel-gazers get up to, but this could not be further from the truth. Meditation is one of the most valuable tools we have for our mental health and wellbeing, and it is really easy to learn.
Not only that, but it is scientifically proven to help you reduce your stress and anxiety levels, find more peace and calm and boost productivity all in one fell swoop. Meditation works, so give it a chance to work for you.
Use productivity tools
As well as meditation, there are a wide range of productivity tools you can use to better organize your time so that you can get things done in less time and therefore not have to push your body and mind to breaking point and the inevitable burnout that comes with it.
From the best live website chat service that will enable you to run your business more efficiently by speeding up customer service to RescueTime which quietly runs in the background of your computer.
Tracking everything you do so you can see where you waste time and block those apps and websites that are big offenders at distracting you, there are so many productivity tools out there that can transform your life for the better. Use them.
Get plenty of sleep
It goes without saying that, if you want to avoid burnout, you need to ensure that you are as well-rested as you can possibly be. So many of us think that we can sacrifice sleep in favor of furthering our careers, building our businesses, or having a good time, and sure, we might be able to get away with doing that for a little while, but sooner or later, something has to give.
If you don’t get enough sleep for an extended period of time, you are more likely to be stressed, anxious, and depressed; you are more likely to make mistakes at work; you are more likely to be unable to function
Make sure you get 7-9 hours of sleep each night by turning off the TV or work computer at least an hour before bed, drinking a soothing hot beverage, and meditating although it might feel like you are wasting valuable time for a while, you will soon see the benefits when you wake up each morning with a clear head and all of the energy you need to get efficiently through your day with no end of time to spare.
Don’t set unrealistic goals
One thing that can cause you to burn out, which so many of us are guilty of, is setting unrealistic goals for ourselves. It’s good to aim high when you want to build a strong career, set up your own business, or achieve a personal goal like running a marathon, but you need to take things slowly one step at a time.
If you aim for the stars and expect to reach them in a very small amount of time, you will natural;y start to push yourself harder and harder and end up exhausting yourself much more quickly than you would if you made lots of smaller achievable goals, which will, together, lead you to the path of success when the time is right.
Eat a healthy diet
It should go without saying that, if you want to avoid burning out then you need to ensure you are feeding your body the best possible fuel. So many people who suffer from burnout eat an unhealthy diet of takeout food and quick junk food that they can throw down between meetings.
It’s not super clear which came first, the burnout or the bad eating habits, but it doesn’t take a genius to know that neglecting your body in this way can have a negative impact.
If you want to be as healthy as possible, then eating home-cooked meals of fruits vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins is a safe bet. It will give your body all of the nutrients it needs to thrive and lower your chances of stress and depression being a big part of your life.
It can be tempting to eat junk food when you’re so busy, but if you’re having chocolate and chips for dinner, that’s a clear sign you are not taking care of yourself and carving out free time to rest and relax, which puts you squarely on the road to burnout city.
Take a walk
You might be thinking there is no way you can walk when you have such a busy schedule, but that’s kind of the point. Walking to work if you can, or even just taking the stairs instead of the elevator, will give you time to think and the option of walking will help you to relax, while also giving you some small amount of exercise, both f which will definitely help you to avoid the dreaded burnout.
Take more time to slow down, move your body and smell the roses and you will feel so much more better for it than you thought possible.
Take more breaks
As well as adding more walks into your day, you should add in more breaks too. Whether you take 5 minutes every hour to stand up, stretch and rest your eyes or you take 2 hours for a long lunch including a walk around a local park, the more time you let yourself have away from the task at hand, the more effective you will be at completing the task efficiently, and the less stressed and exhausted you will feel at the end of every day.
But breaks don’t always have to be just about getting the blood pumping or even getting the body moving. Sometimes, it’s all about the exact opposite! Generally speaking, you don’t necessarily need to be productive. Instead, if you wanted to, you could get all cosy or even lazy instead.
For example, you during a break, whether it be ten minutes or even a whole day, why not use it to just relax and do something relaxing? You could lay back on the couch and play a good game of Solitaire on your laptop, watch a movie, or even both at the same time!
Take a vacation
If you have vacation time, use it. Don’t be a hero and work yourself half to death when you could head off and spend some quality time at the beach, soaking up the rays and taking care of your body and soul so that you can avoid burnout and ultimately be better at what you do.
See a doctor
If you are starting to feel more stressed and exhausted than usual, see a doctor, get some help and hopefully, you can avoid the full effects of burnout from touching your life and making things harder than they need to be.
Burnout is a really bad mental state to get into. Once you are burnt out, you will find it much more difficult to get through work, run your business, study for college, or do all of the things you need to do to keep a clean and tidy home.
You will find it hard to function and you will always be highly stressed and exhausted, so it really is better to prevent burnout before it creeps up on you, and the suggestions above will certainly help you with that.
