Seek the Right Support

A support system can come in different ways, from family to friends and, of course, professionals. A support group for separated or divorced parents can be invaluable because they can give you insight into things that will be upcoming.

For example, if you are working with a family lawyer and going through the mediation process, understanding how to conduct yourself properly can ensure you get the best possible outcome, not just for you or your children, but for everybody.

Acknowledge How You Feel

There is still an age-old practice of having to push through when we go through something tough because we feel like we need to prove to ourselves that we are strong and can withstand anything. The fact is you should allow yourself to feel the range of emotions without judgement.

We should recognise these feelings, but also process them because this is a key part of the healing process. Many people feel they need to put off the stages of grief or the wide range of emotions because they think it will be a distraction. However, we will all need to address these things at some point, and taking time to recognise and process them can make a huge difference to you.

Avoid Negativity in Front of the Children

While it’s okay for your children to see you are upset, it’s important not to have your emotional outbursts in front of them. For example, if you are badmouthing your ex over the phone to someone else, you need to do your best to either keep a lid on it for now or do it away from them.

We should try to step away from our children if we’re experiencing major mood swings because we have to remember they are going through this as well, and we need to all understand that while being upset is okay, processing this can take as long as it takes.

Don’t Forget to Look After Yourself

For some reason, the advice we’d give a friend, we never tend to follow ourselves. We should always remember that the advice we give to others, we should follow as well. Pursuing hobbies, exercise, meditation, and everything that will help you care for yourself is going to ensure that you are more present for your children.

When we avoid looking after ourselves, thinking that we are actually going to be stronger for exerting some discipline or restraint, we’ve got to remember that as beneficial as these emotions are, we need to give ourselves the things that rejuvenate us.

The breakup of a family is difficult, but by managing your emotions in a constructive way, it will help you, your children, and everybody involved.
