Fun fitness challenges to take on in the next 12 months

Inside: Fun fitness challenges to take on in the next 12 months. Collaborative post.

The fitness industry is booming and never before has there been so many different fitness challenges that you can take on. No matter your fitness level and interests, there is something for everyone. You can run a half marathon, take on a 14-day Camino Portugues Coastal Route from Porto, cycle the Haute Route Alps, or test your nerve with a tough mudder.

When deciding on a fitness challenge, there is a lot to consider. Do you want to travel for it? Do you have enough free time to train for it? Are you going to take it on alone or with your friends and family members and so on? One thing to remember is that it’s the taking part that counts, so try and do something that you can enjoy and not necessarily have to compete at.

With all this in mind, below we have put together our guide on three fun fitness challenges to take on in the next 12 months.

Hiking Challenge

Over the past few years, hiking has grown in popularity with more people taking on a hiking challenge than ever. The reason for this is that you can enjoy a hike and its challenge whilst also getting to see incredible views and taking part with your loved ones. You can hike in your local area or you can sign up for a hike abroad and enjoy it over a few days or weeks – this Camino de Santiago is 11 days and you’ll travel around 114 km, which is very impressive!

Running Challenge

There is always going to be a running challenge that you can take on. Throughout the year, most destinations will have a running challenge of some sort, whether it’s a marathon/half marathon or something that combines challenges like a tough mudder or a fun run. If you don’t have any running experience, you could try a couch to 5k, or if you have a good base level of fitness, you could sign up for your local half. A lot of people will travel for a running challenge, so don’t be afraid to look further afield than your local area.

Swimming Challenge

With so many benefits, swimming will always be up there, when it comes to the best type of fun fitness challenges. Swimming is great for your cardiovascular system as well as your physical strength. It’s low impact, meaning the risk of injury is lower and it’s very accessible. When it comes to swimming challenges, you could try a triathlon, an open-water competition or a sea swim. Throughout the year, a lot of swimming centres work with charities to put on an event which also raises money.
