When my mum lived further away, we would go down for a whole weekend to stay. This would mean we would spend the Saturday night watching a movie together- a time we all enjoyed. Now that she lives just around the corner we have lost that side of things. Of course it is great seeing her any time we like but I do miss those evenings snuggled up together.
We were invited to have a family movie night by Gracewell of Fareham, they are a care home provider and they encourage regular movie nights with residents and their families. I took their invitation as the perfect opportunity to get my mum round to enjoy one of those longed for movie nights.
We started off with pizza and wedges for dinner. We don’t often have pizza as LJ cannot have gluten, however I found a gluten free pizza in Sainsbury’s – their free from range is second to none! So for once, everyone was able to sit down and have pizza together and it was great!
It was then time for the movie! It was quite difficult to choose one that each generation would enjoy, but in the end I went for Mrs Doubtfire- I have not seen in it absolutely yonks! Such a classic and of course stars Robin Williams, I still can’t believe he is gone.
We were treated to a few old style sweets- the old ones are the best aren’t they? The girls certainly enjoyed them- especially the popping candy which LJ found absolutely hilarious!!
A few months ago we discovered Joe and Seph’s popcorn and so were very excited to get stuck into some more for the evening. If you haven’t tried it yet you really must!
We all enjoyed the movie- especially Little G who really loved the character of Mrs Doubtfire. She also loved the little girl who also played the part of Matilda- one of her favourite movies. I often think of Little G as my little Matilda, she is so bright despite little encouragement from me (and that is me being a teacher too!!! Whoops!).
The whole evening was so much fun and we all laughed so much, I forgot what a great movie it was! It was so nice to spend real social time with my mum too, like I said we see her a lot but mainly popping into town or helping her around the house. To sit down and socialise was really lovely and I definitely need to make more time for that. Since my dad left 18 months ago she is on her own so much more. I don’t know what the future holds but I will be making sure she spends more time with us as a family, doing some more laughing!
