Inside: How to plan out your future career. Collaborative post
If you’re reading this blog post, then no doubt you have found yourself in a career that you no longer find fulfilling. Perhaps it was never more than a way of earning your living, or perhaps you’ve moved up the career ladder to the point where you’re no longer doing the job that attracted you to the industry.
Whatever your reasons for being dissatisfied with your current career, in today’s world you no longer need to stick with it if it doesn’t inspire you.
Now is the time to stop reading and actually do something about your life.
Try this…
Where do you see yourself this time next year? In five years? Ten? Do you like what you see?
Are you one of the people who think that this time next year they’ll be doing the same commute, sitting at the same desk, and dealing with the same old problems? Maybe in five years you’ll have moved up the career ladder and have a new office. Or maybe not. Doesn’t sound like a terribly inspiring future, does it?
Let yourself dream a little…
Ok, let’s try this again. Where do you want to be this time next year? Five years? Ten? Take your dream and run with it a little. Do you want your manager’s job by this time next year? Or are you ready for a change? Do you want to move into something new, take your HGV training and get on the road? Maybe you can see yourself being part of a team of residential architects? Perhaps you want to start your own business so that you do not have to answer to anyone but yourself?
Make a plan to succeed…
Now that you’ve got some idea of where you want to be you need to make a plan to get there. Just like when you’re booking a holiday. Perhaps you decide you quite fancy a trip to Lanzarote this year so you start researching hotels and flights to get there. In fact, some people spend more time researching where they’re going to spend their next holiday than on their own personal development.
This is why some people are still sat behind the same desk year in, year out with no end in sight until their retirement or redundancy. If you put a plan together, you will know the exact steps that you need to take in order to get to where you want to be. Whether that’s taking a digital course or going back to school for further training and education.
…and put it into action
Once you have your plan you need to actually do it. You’ll never make the move if you aren’t proactive enough to start doing it. Take those courses. Fill in those forms. Write that business plan. This can often be the most difficult part, yet once you start ticking things off your list, the motivation will keep coming to succeed.
Not sure what you should be doing next? Then make your next action to speak to a professional about how they can help you get the career you deserve.
