Teach Your Child Phonics With What Katy Said

The other day I was sitting next to another mum and she was helping her child spell out her name. I cannot remember what the little girl was called but her name had an ‘m’ in it. Her mum said find the muh, where is the muh? and my inner teacher wanted to scream! You see, I teach the very little ones and one of my favourite things is phonics- hearing people say things wrong just grates on me.

understanding phonics, teach your child phonics, teach my child phonics, how do i teach phonics, what is phonics

So, the other day after hearing ‘muh’ I realised that it was not that mum’s fault that she didn’t know how it should indeed be said. And after talking with a few friends they too don’t know how phonics is taught these days. And then struck upon an idea!  I will share my knowledge of phonics so that you may help your child learn their sounds and eventually learn to read and write!

Now when I was a child it was ‘muh’ and fuh’ etc… and it didn’t really do me any harm as I can read and write perfectly. However, times have changed and teachers now know that children learn a lot quicker when taught sounds in their purest form- that is what I want to share with you!

As parents we are are our children’s very first teachers, they look to us for everything and absorb every little word we say. I am not saying start full on phonics lessons with them but if you are equipped with the right knowledge then you can set them on the right path before they start school.

So how will it work?

This is where I am so very excited! Each Monday I will write a post sharing various ideas to help your child with phonics, moving on to reading and writing as the weeks go by. BUT, this is the exciting part… I am going to do a live lesson each Monday afternoon on Periscope where you can interact and ask me questions. That broadcast will be live for 24 hours afterwards so you can catch up at any point. I will then upload the lesson (if Periscope will let me!) onto my youtube channel in case you want to come back to it later.

I don’t want to patronise anyone and won’t be treating you like 5 year olds haha, I just want every parent out there to be able to help their child reach their full potential. So many of us were taught the ‘old way’ and will therefore be teaching it to the next generation without realising it. Teachers then need to undo that learning and it can hold children back. I want to help you get it right straight away so your child has the best start!

I am going to be starting next Monday but will be broadcasting live on Periscope this morning at 11am (Monday 3rd August 2015) just to get a feel of who is out there and what you want to know. So if you have anything you would like to ask then pop on over!

See you there!

Oh Katy what a great idea. I will be tuning in (tweet me please) as we never did phonics in the USA like you do in the UK and I want to teach B and help him learn starting school this year but I have no idea how to pronounce any of them properly how he should be doing it. Great idea. Thank you so much for linking up to Share With Me. #sharewithme

This is really interesting Katy, I'm always wondering how best to teach Monkey phonics, I know how important they are but with so many toys, songs and tv probs encouraging ABC it I really hard. Monkey knows all of his alphabet and wants to read so I am trying to teach the sounds. It doesn't help that hubs doesn't like phonics as they don't work for every word... But I know how important they are for school. Will look forward to reading your tips! Xx

Ah now some people think that phonics doesnt work for every word but that might be because they dont know all of the sounds. for example car- he may think c-a-r but actually it is c-ar..... ar is a sound. :-) x
