7 Ways to unwind & relax as a busy mum.

Inside: Different ways you can unwind and relax as a mum.

There are some days when I find myself wanting to hide away, far away from all of the noise and stress that comes with having kids. It seems to be one of those anti-perks of the job. You get some awesome babies to love and cherish but they drive you mad and send you grey prematurely.

I’ve been a mother for 8 years now and it has not been easy. And that is with me having well-behaved kids! Motherhood is tough, and throw in housework and the mental load that we take on as women, it really can drag you down.

Which is why we need ‘me time’. It isn’t a ‘want’, it is a need because we need to recharge ourselves so that we are ready to start all over again the next day.

Now, I have spent many an evening reading all about me-time, how we should make sure we go off for day trips here or afternoons there. But that sort of me-time isn’t what is needed. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I won’t say no to a weekend away but it is not about once-in-a-blue-moon events.

Me-time needs to be a daily occurrence.

Yes, you heard me right!

So here are the 7 ways I make time for myself to help me stay cool, calm and collected.

7 Ways to unwind & relax

SNUGGLE ON THE SOFA. Do you have comfy clothes that make you feel cosy? Some people love getting into their pyjamas, I love leggings!

These are my new favourite – they are from Love Leggings* and are made from high-quality material that doesn’t go see-through!

Whatever you prefer, make sure to get changed out of your day clothes and into your comfies at the end of the day- every day. It will help your mind to shift into a more relaxed state.

HAVE A RELAXING BATH. And don’t tell me you don’t have the time. You have to make the time. Ask someone to watch the kids or sit them in front of Mr Tumble. Or, wait until they are in bed! Run it while you put them to bed and jump straight in.

It is important to make time to do these things. There is no excuse – we all have the time, we just choose to spend it in different ways.

STAY HYDRATED. The more dehydrated I get, the more stressed I seem to become. Why? Water has natural calming properties apparently and dilutes many a symptom – including stress.

I carry this water bottle from Prezzybox* everywhere. It doesn’t leak and keeps my water cool throughout the day. Plus it is cute, right? Now I have no excuse not to drink enough each day!

Can definitely recommend Playgroups & Prosecco by Jo Middleton.

READ OFTEN. How often do you read? Once a day? A week? In a blue moon? I went a whole 2 years in between reads and I missed it so much. Now I read every single night and it helps me to unwind from any stresses of the day.

If reading isn’t your thing, try to do another mindful activity instead. This could be playing a game of cards or a board game, colouring – anything that means you are busy doing that activity. The opposite of a mindful activity would be to watch tv or scroll on your phone – they actually stress your brain out.

I bought this a year ago and am on my second bottle – a good night’s sleep in a bottle!

HAVE AN EARLY NIGHT. Ask yourself this, would you prefer to stay up late and watch tv as your me-time or go to bed early so that you can wake up fresh and ready to start the day with gusto?

I know it is tempting to stay up as you feel like you need some time to yourself after a long day – I used to feel the same. But I guarantee, getting into bed nice an early is a treat and it means that you wake up early enough to get a headstart on everyone else.

LISTEN TO MUSIC. It makes everything better, doesn’t it? Feeling down? Listen to music and it cheers you up. Feeling unmotivated? Listen to music and it can make you feel like you can take over the world. Music can change your mood within minutes.

As soon as I feel myself feeling at all stressed, I put on Spotify and have a dance around the kitchen. It calms me down, lifts my mood and makes me feel in control again.

HAVE A SPA DAY. Now this one won’t be a daily or even monthly occurrence, but it is definitely something you should try to do at least once or twice a year.

Buyagift* have a huge range of spa breaks available, ranging from a weekend away to a mani-pedi – everything you can think of to have a little treat. I went along recently with a mum friend and it was exactly what we both needed.

Whatever you do, whatever makes you feel good, make sure to take the time every single day. If you are feeling calm, feeling relaxed, feeling looked-after, then you will be better equipt to look after everyone else.

Great suggestions! As a mother, I find that my needs are always the last thing I think about. This is a great reminder to make sure to take care of myself 🙂
