A correctly applied foundation is the groundwork for a flawless complexion. It sets the stage for various looks, from the full-on glam look to a more natural look. Still, mastering the basics of foundation application takes time and practice. However, once you have the skill, you can transform your makeup routine and boost your confidence. A flawless foundation requires five steps.
1. Prep Your Canvas
Before applying any makeup, foundation or otherwise, clean your face. Foundation applies the best to a clean and well-nourished face. You should always start your pre-makeup routine with a gentle cleanser or scrub to remove any makeup residue, excess oils, or dirt. Once you rinse your face, you want to pat your face dry. Don’t rub your face with a towel because rubbing can irritate the skin.
You want to use a cleanser designed for your skin type. Read the labels and ingredients to determine how the cleanser fits into your makeup and skincare routine. For drier skin types, you might want to use a cleanser with a moisturizer.
2. Must Moisturize
After cleansing and before finding proper makeup brushes, you must moisturize your skin, regardless of skin type. A moisturizer is the key to a flawless foundation application. When your skin is well-hydrated, it allows the foundation to apply smoothly without clinging to dry patches of skin where it may emphasize texture.
If you have oily skin, choose a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer. For dry skin, look for hyaluronic acid formulas that offer extra hydration. Wait a few minutes after applying the moisturizer before applying a foundation to ensure the moisturizer fully absorbs.
3. Apply a Primer
A primer is crucial to smooth, long-lasting, and beautifully applied makeup. It creates a smooth base for the foundation, helping it adhere better to the skin. Like any makeup or skincare product, you must choose a primer that suits your skin’s needs.
For oily skin, it is best to use a primer with a matte finish. If you have acne, look for a primer with salicylic acid. Finally, look for primers that contain glycerin or are enriched with shea butter for dry skin.
You want to apply a thin layer of primer to your entire face. For people with visible pores or oiliness, pay special attention to the areas most affected.
4. Apply Your Foundation
Now, it’s time to apply your foundation, which will require the appropriate tools. While you could use the Patrick Ta contour brush because it is excellent, it is best to use a foundation brush from the collection instead.
A foundation brush is best when opting for full coverage, but a damp beauty sponge might be better if you want sheer to medium coverage. Your finger could also work, but it will not provide even coverage or blending.
You want to start small, from the center of your face, working outward. Use a minimal amount initially, adding thin layers as necessary.
5. Use a Setting Powder
Use a setting powder for all-day staying power. You don’t need a lot. Lightly dusting the powder under the eyes and around the T-zone can help control oil and prevent foundation fading or creasing.
