Reduce clutter

So often, a small space looks even smaller because of the clutter being hoarded. So if you don’t have enough space then the first port of call is to reduce the amount of stuff you have rather than try and organise it into pretty storage boxes. Just by decluttering you can make a room look a lot bigger but it also means that you don’t require as much storage as you might have initially thought.
Rearrange furniture
Once you’ve had a good clear out, have a think about what furniture you have in the space and whether any can be removed / swapped out / rearranged. Sometimes a simple swap around can make a big difference to floor space and almost give the illusion of a bigger room. And of course if you can’t remove anything or rearrange you can always swap normal furniture for a space saving alternative like Kaydian TV Beds which are a great idea!
Under bed storage
One of the biggest items of furniture in a bedroom is the bed. So why not make good use out of it and either buy a divan bed with built-in storage or if you have a platform bed you could get some under-bed storage boxes that roll out on casters. Use the space to store out of season clothes or toys that you have on rotation. You can even get beds with a second bed build in that can be used for guests – perfect if you don’t have a guest room.
Picture rails

Utilise your wall space by putting up floating shelves. A great way to use the space is to get picture rail shelving from IKEA and use it to show off all of your favourite books and pictures.
Baskets
Baskets can be used for toys, for blankets, for shoes… anything that doesn’t fit inside the storage you have available but still needs a home. Wicker baskets are an attractive way to store anything that doesn’t fit anywhere else or you need access to frequently.
Hooks

Not enough closet space for everything? Why not put up some hooks on the walls and hang the bulkier items like clothes or your dressing gown. You could even use hooks to keep your bags neatly arranged rather than dumping them at the bottom of a small closet.
Pegboard
Only have a little space available for a desk but have a lot of paperwork? Or perhaps you want a dresser but don’t have space for many items to be kept out? A peg board is a great option for using the wall space to arrange various bits and bobs.
Storage boxes on shelves
Do you have lots of shelves but need more drawer space for small items? Why not get some pretty boxes – a great place to store all of the odds and ends and can then be placed on the shelves. Problem solved!
Hanging organiser
A clever way of freeing up floor space is to use ceiling space instead! Hang baskets from the ceiling using a hook to create extra storage space for plants or hair accessories – whatever you need it for there are storage ideas to suit!
Hanging laundry hamper
Something that will often take up precious space is a laundry hamper. If you have limited space, move it from the floor onto the wall with a hanging hamper -giving you extra space at floor level for something else or just free space to give the illusion of a bigger room.
Raised bed

If practical for the person using it, raise the bed off the floor to make use of vertical space. This could be a cabin bed with a chest of drawers underneath or a high rise bed with a desk or sofa underneath!
Folding desk

A great space saving idea is to use a folding desk or wall mounted desk that folds away against the wall when not in use meaning space is maximised. Great for small rooms where space is a premium.
Built in bed storage

Beds with built in shelving are a great idea. Either along the length of the bed or built into the headboard. Either way, you are getting the benefit of added space without needing a separate piece of furniture.
Floating dressing table

Maximise floor space by using floating furniture attached to walls. Legs take up unnecessary room at times so if you can attach a dresser or small desk securely to the wall then that is all that’s needed.
Use behind the door

The back of your bedroom door is a wasted space so get some over door hooks or a door organizer to make good use of the space available. You could store your shoes, dolls, books… anything you fancy!
Shelf above the door
Don’t forget above the door – that is the perfect place to store items such as bags, hats or boxes filled with your treasures. A simple shelf is all you need!
Shelf above curtains
The space above windows is often overlooked too. A shelf or picture rail would make use of the space and make for a wonderful display for anything that is more decorative than needed on a daily basis.
Functional furniture

Does your furniture work hard for you? Put Command hooks on the inside of your closet door to store hats or bags, choose a bedside table that has drawers or shelves, have a mirror that opens up to reveal all of your jewellery. Every inch of your room is precious – don’t waste any!
Hanging rail storage
An easy way to make use of hanging space is to invest in some hanging storage solutions. Not all items of clothing suit being on a hanger so use the hanging shelves to store your knitwear and other bits and bobs. You can also buy smaller shelf pockets for your shoes to make use of vertical space instead of shoving them at the bottom of your closet in a heap.
Felt hangers
If you are short on hanging space you need to make sure that you are making the most out of the space you actually have. Felt hangers are slimmer than the average hanger and so pack together and can create a lot of space when you need it.
Dividers in drawers
Dividing up the space with drawer dividers means that a) you can keep everything orderly and easy to find but also b) create more usable space due to the fact that each section can be filled to the top.
Roll and fold clothes

So much space can be wasted with an inefficient fold! By learning the most efficient way to fold each item of clothing you own you can almost double the space available to you. One of the best ways to save space is to store your tops with the fold at the top, with each top stacked one behind the other.
Small spaces can seem restrictive at first but with some additional storage space created using clever hacks, you can make the space feel bigger without the need for a professional organizer. The best part is, you can have fun putting it all together with cute storage baskets and ingenious storage units to create a space you love.
