Have a home you can be proud of with one easy step

Shutting my eyes wouldn’t shut out the mess. I knew it was still there, I could feel it suffocating me in my sleep.

It was suffocating my life.

A washing pile up to the ceiling, dishes overflowing on the kitchen surfaces and enough toys to start my own toy shop (if broken toys with bits missing are your thing…).

Enough was enough.

I can remember the day I snapped. I’d been watching a video about minimalism, someone sharing how neat and tidy their house was.

Why isn’t my house that bloody tidy? Where is all of their mess??

Look at my mess!!!!!!!!

The thing is with those videos, is that they aren’t relatable to the majority of people out there. Definitely not relatable to me. They made me want to sob while I tidied up toys for the 6 millionth time that day.

So I decided to share my mess. Share what my reality looked like… while I tidied the hell out of it.

I wanted a home I could be proud of, but one that was still homely and real to me. I am definitely not a minimalist kinda gal.

I have far too many shoes for that.

The more I filmed and the more I tidied, the better I felt. I was cleansing my home and cleansing my soul at the same time.

But how was I going to maintain it? How was I going to keep it from returning to the state it was in before?

That was when I learned this trick…

I had viewers telling me to check out the FlyLady, that her books had changed the way they tidied.

I am a bit slow on the uptake so it took me a while to get around to it if I’m honest. But I am so glad I did in the end.

She’s changed my life.

Routines are key, she teaches that. I love routines so it was easy for me to slot into her way of thinking.

But how do you start?

Shine your sink.

That sounds crazy, I know, I thought it too. But honestly, go do it right now.

Go into your kitchen, clear away the stuff around the sink (move it aside, bin it, whatever…) and give your sink a proper clean. Get out the bleach, use window cleaner to make it shiny. Get out a cloth and buff it!

Now stand back and look at it.

I am telling you, it all starts with that sink. Once you have that sorted, you will feel a sense of accomplishment and that is addictive.

I have learned that by starting small, by focusing on one area at a time, I can get a whole lot more done. I even get to see the bottom of my wash pile these days!!

So go shine your sink until it sparkles and let me know how it feels? I am betting it will make you smile.

  1. Speaking from experience I feel your pain in keeping a clean home with little one’s around is sometimes more stressful than running my business, not to mention also having three dogs!

I do agree finding ways of creating a sense of achievement definitely helps and not getting in stuck in the mindset of if I’m not going to do it perfectly I won’t do it – which seems to happen far to often.

Can’t wait to try the cleaning of the sink trick tonight (I live a rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle of course)

Haha it is funny how our lives change as we get older. Gone are the rock n roll days and instead we love a shiny sink and a new vacuum haha! x

  2. I love a shiny sink! Everything in the house (well, kitchen) feels so much tidier and cleaner when it’s done! Mess gets me down a lot so I’ve started writing lists and daily tasks to tackle it bit by bit and I think it’s working. Defo going to try Flylady though, I’m also a sucker for a good routine!
