Weekend Away: Our Trip To Athens – Part 2

Day 2 of our trip to Athens was just the most amazing, jam packed, day I have had in a long time. We were up at the crack of dawn once again but all very excited to see what the day would bring. Walking along the street to meet the bus at 7am we were greeted by sunshine and warmth and just the general smell you only ever get abroad in warm countries- I love it!

When we looked at the various day trips available from Expedia, the One Day Cruise immediately caught my eye. Being so close to the coast, I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to see some of the Greek islands. Throughout the course of the day we would see 3 islands and experience a little Greek culture. Perfect!

It took a good 3 hours to get to the first island and the girls were so tired (as was I) after such an early start. We sat on the back deck and enjoyed the sunshine and the views. We passed by many of the Greek islands, some of them uninhabited – I didn’t realise how rocky they were actually.

The first island we visited was Hydra- wow what a windy place! We went to the top of one of the battlements and had to make a swift descent! I actually think if I had let go of LJ’s hand she would have blown away! We laughed about it once we had made it back down to the bottom!

Back to the boat and it was time for lunch! We were treated to a buffet with rice, pasta, salads and a huge pile of chicken. Again, cannot fault the Greeks for their food- just delicious!

The next stop was Poros, I think my favourite of the three. It was so different from Hydra, more of a Mediterranean feel with palm trees and blazing sunshine.  The sea was the most amazing colour too, with crystal clear waters. I would have happily stayed there all day!

The final destination was the island of Aegina, where were would stay for 2 hours. We were all starving and so decided to find somewhere to eat along the seafront. There are so many to choose from but Péμbn (last restaurant on the right as you look at the dock) caught my eye and it turned out to be a real gem of a place- reasonably priced food which was delicious! I would definitely recommend going there is you are on the island.

We chose pizza and felt a little bit bad for doing so as we felt like we should be choosing Greek over Italian. However, when it arrived we realised that the Greeks have their own twist on the pizza and actually I prefer it! The amount of meat used was amazing, such good value and so tasty! Definitely something I am going to recreate at home!

It was so lovely to be able to sit and relax out in the evening sun- especially knowing that back in London they had had a little snow that day! It was soon time to go back to the boat though, ready for some in-house entertainment. The crew of the boat taught us some Greek dancing and we all joined in with a good few Opa’s!
