Our Pirate Themed Week

I am really enjoying these themed weeks, planning our activities around a theme means we get much more done and have a focus for each day. This week’s theme was inspired by a toy hook I picked up for 20p on a charity stall in town.

pirate themed activitesPirates was always one of my favourite themes to do with my class, we would decorate the classroom and have a ship as our roleplay area. The theme would last a half term though so all of the effort would be worthwhile. In a week, building a huge ship isn’t especially practical so we just did some of the fun activities that the theme has to offer.

PIRATE HATS

I found a simple way to make pirate hats on the Twinkl website (I am just loving it right now!!). We used newspaper and within 30 seconds Little G was ready to go swashbuckling!

We have done so many activities in our tuff spot and the gorgeous weather this week has meant we have had it out once again. This time we transformed it into a pirate island, putting sand in the middle and adding water around it for the ocean. While Little L was asleep we hid some pennies in the sand for her to find, she loves finding things, a detective in the making!

I used to love doing this as a child and Little G loved it too, as she was rubbing each coin I was telling her which ones they were. She is really good with her numbers so picked it up quickly.

BAKING

Ok so technically it isn’t baking this week, we were pushed for time so decided to decorate some digestives instead. I really need to replenish my food coloring supplies as we only had blue- so desert islands it was!

TREASURE MAPS

This was messy and fun! Easy to do – everyone has teabags in the house don’t they? Once the paper was dry I let her decorate it with an X marks the spot, dashed lines to show the way and some trees (I helped out with the trees though!). Little L also had a go, she loves joining in with everything!

READING

We only have a couple of pirate themed books in the house, mostly baby books really with ‘That’s not my pirate’ and a page dedicated to pirates in ‘Row row row your boat’. Little G’s favourite is Pirates Love Underpants!

There was so much more I wanted to do this week but we just ran out of time! There is a lot of crossover with other themes though so we will be able to do more fun activities I found at another time!

Our next theme is going to be ‘Materials’, it will be in a couple of weeks as we are going to spread it over 2 weeks due to lots of day trips!

It does look like it was a great week. Both of my girls still love pirates too! I think that's why they live Cornwall so much. They do fire the imagination. Thank you for hosting this great linky lovely xx
