Catch up with day 1 and day 2.
Day 3 was all about the history of Athens, the main reason I chose to go there above anywhere else in Greece. We got up early once again and filled up on pastries at breakfast. Our hotel had breakfast included and there was so much on offer we squirrelled some away for later on in the day too.
The best bit about breakfast, as with dinner on the first night, was the view of the Acropolis. It was great to see it in the day and we were able to explain to Little G that we would be going to see it later on in the day.
After breakfast we made our way to the coach to begin our tour of the city. We were shown all of the main sights of the city, including an arena, the presidential palace and the government buildings. This was just a precursor to the main event of course- the guided tour of the Acropolis.
When you get to the foot of the hill you are greeted by hundreds of olive trees. They grow wild absolutely everywhere and the Greeks have them coming out of their ears! They never need to buy any either as they have them growing in their gardens. I am not really a fan of them but the trees were so lovely, glistening silver in the morning sun.
It was a bit of a climb and LJ needed to be carried up but the tour guide stopped every minute or so to show us the view from every angle. It was such a shame that so much of the Acropolis is covered in scaffolding but it is to be expected of course. Little G and I twinning here in stripes and denim (LJ may have been matching too…). I am loving denim at the moment, always being a leggings girl before, and adore my jeans. I also lived in my Alicia hoodie the whole weekend- so snuggly and was perfect for the early morning starts and late evenings.
The photo doesn’t do the Parthenon justice really, the scale of the structure is so impressive and the fact the huge chunks of marble were lifted high onto the hill is just such an amazing feat. Unfortunately video wasn’t permitted on the hill so we only have photographic evidence, but the views were stunning so made for great shots!
Once we were back down the hill there wasn’t too long before we would have to make our way back to the airport. We stopped off to have an icecream in one of the many Greek restaurants lining the streets. Thankfully the Greeks love their sorbets so LJ was able to join in the fun too!
As we sat around the table I felt so blessed. Blessed to have my family with me and blessed to have had such an fantastic opportunity. Athens has been on my list of places to visit for such a long time, it has such an amazing history and the Parthenon is just fabulous. To now be able to say I have been just seems like a dream- certainly sitting here with the heating on full makes it seem like a distant memory too!
We took a taxi back to the airport- using the same taxi driver from Friday. The economy crash has affected businesses so badly so I was glad to be able to give him the work. If you are planning on going to Athens let me know as I have his number- better to go by recommendation and he is so lovely.
Back at the airport we waited for our flight to be called. The girls enjoyed looking at the planes as they took off and squealed with delight each time one went past. They were an absolute delight the whole weekend and can now say they have been on an aeroplane. Little G took in her little camera for show and tell the day after we got back and was so proud showing off her photos- she is becoming a keen photographer – I will have to employ her in the future!
Here is a little video of the whole weekend. As I sat and edited it I realised how much I want to vlog more- just to capture my little family and our adventures.
The whole weekend went by in a flash and there was so much more we could have done, however the tours we went on gave us a flavour of Greek life and we left with some amazing memories. A huge thank you to Expedia for giving us this amazing opportunity- we loved every minute!

I visited the Parthenon as a teenager - such a long time ago - but remember being overwhelmed by the scale of it. We were only in Greece for a day. There's so much we didn't see so it's been lovely to read your weekend series X
