Inside: Four Simple Ways to Cosy Up Your Home This Winter. Collaborative post.
Winter is a time of year during which it’s natural to feel a little bit down in the dumps. We’ll tend to spend much of our time indoors, sheltering from the chill and the drizzle.
But if we’re to counteract that feeling of dourness, and feel truly comfortable in our homes, it’s worth investing a little bit of energy into getting those homes into good condition.
Change Up Your Texture and Tones
Our choice of décor can make a massive difference. You’ll want to pick colours and patterns that support a feeling of warmth – which tends to mean earthy shades of red and orange. Contrasting textures can add visual interest, and help to bring the best out of a potentially cold space.
For example, you might counteract the sterility of a hardwood floor by investing in a plush, fluffy rug.
Low Glow Lighting Can Make All the Difference
Of course, lighting can vastly influence the overall vibe of a space. This applies especially during winter, when we’re more reliant on artificial lighting.
Try to distribute your light sources around a room. If all the light emanates from a single overhead bulb, then you’ll end up with stark, ugly shadows throughout the space. A combination of standing lamps, accent lighting, and even soft candles can provide a perfect antidote.
Windows and Curtains Shape Your Room
The larger your windows, the greater the feeling of openness, and the greater the spread of natural light. This is particularly important during winter, when daylight is in short supply.
At the same time, your choice of window dressing can make a big difference to the way the room looks and feels. Big, heavy curtains can often look the part – and they can play a vital role in retaining the heat, too. Provided, of course, that you’ve remembered to draw them.
Create Your Own Space
If you can carve out a small piece of your home that’s dedicated to relaxation and cosiness, then you’ll tend to enjoy better quality relaxation time. A number of locations might naturally suggest themselves. A bay window with a great view and a few key blankets and pillows might, for example, work wonders.
Even if you can’t pick out an obvious space, you might set one aside for yourself. Often, all that’s needed is a suitable armchair, a warm lamp, and a stack of books.
