Carpets and rugs are wonderful additions to any home. They provide comfort underfoot, add warmth to a room, and tie the decor together. However, they can also be magnets for odours.

Whether it’s pet accidents, spilled food or drinks, or simply the accumulation of everyday life, rugs and carpets can start to emit unpleasant odours over time. The good news is that there are effective ways to get rid of these smells and enjoy a fresh and clean living space.

In this blog post, we’ll explore various methods to help you eliminate those stubborn odours from your rugs or carpets.

Vacuum Regularly

Prevention is often the best solution when it comes to carpet and rug odours. Regular vacuuming is the best way to keep on top of your carpet cleaning. It helps remove dirt, debris, and particles that can trap odours within carpet fibers. Use a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter to ensure that you’re capturing even the smallest particles, and be thorough in your vacuuming routine, paying special attention to high-traffic areas.

Baking Soda Magic

Baking soda is a versatile household ingredient that can work wonders on unpleasant smells around the home. Simply sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda over the affected area and let it sit for at least 15-20 minutes, or even overnight for stubborn smells. Then, vacuum up the baking soda thoroughly – taking the bad smell with it. Baking soda not only absorbs odours but also helps to neutralize them.

Enzymatic Cleaners

For pet owners dealing with urine odours or any other pet stain, an enzyme cleaner is your best friend. These cleaners contain enzymes that break down the organic matter responsible for the pungent odour. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific product you choose, and make sure to thoroughly blot the affected area with a clean cloth before applying the cleaner.

Steam Cleaning

Steam cleaning is an effective way to deep clean your carpets and rugs, eliminating embedded lingering odours and dirt. You can rent a steam cleaner or hire professional carpet cleaners to do the job. Make sure the area is well-ventilated by opening windows and doors after steam cleaning to help the carpet dry faster and prevent mold spores or mildew growth.

Vinegar and Water Solution

White vinegar is another natural ingredient that can help combat odours in your carpet or rugs. Mix equal parts of water and white vinegar in a spray bottle. Spray the solution lightly onto the problem areas and allow it to air dry. The vinegar smell will dissipate as it dries, taking the unwanted odours with it.

Carpet Shampooing

Periodic carpet shampooing can keep your carpets fresh and clean. You can rent a carpet shampooer or hire professional carpet cleaning services to do the job. Ensure you follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for any shampoo or detergent used, and don’t over-wet the carpet, as excess moisture can lead to mold and mildew.

Use Area Rugs

Consider using area rugs in high-traffic areas or places prone to odours. Area rugs are easier to clean and replace if necessary, helping to protect your entire carpet from stains and wear..

Professional Cleaning

For stubborn or persistent odours that just won’t go away, it might be time to call in the professionals. Certified carpet cleaning services have access to specialized equipment and cleaning solutions that can effectively tackle even the most challenging odours.

Specific smell solutions

Mold & Mildew

The main cause of mold and mildew growth is damp within the environment. So, make sure that you keep rooms well ventilated with fresh air and place any rugs outside on a sunny day to allow the power of sunshine to kill off any bacteria.

However, if you are already dealing with mold or mildew then you will need to get rid of it quickly.

If the smell is mild, all you need to do is sprinkle baking soda onto the surface of the rug – working it into the fibers with.a broom or a dry cloth. Let it sit for a day or so to do its work and then vacuum.

However, if the smell is strong you will have to utilise the power of vinegar too. As before, sprinkle baking soda over the surface but before vacuuming spray on some white vinegar. The vinegar reacts with the baking soda to create an amazing cleaning agent that neutralises smells naturally. Leave it to dry and then wipe away the mix before giving it a vacuum.

Pet urine

Any pet owner will tell you that a set-in pet stain is the worst. So, if you can you need to deal with it immediately before the bacteria has time to act. There are a few pet stain removal tactics to try.

If the area is still wet, blot up as much as you can with paper towels You then want to use cold water to soak the area and dilute any remaining urine. Again, soak up the liquid with a paper towel. Sprinkle some baking soda over the area and leave overnight, before vacuuming the next day.

Now, the problem comes when the stain is already dry because the bacteria will be beginning to form. Whatever you do don’t use a steam cleaner as this will set the stain for good. Instead, you soak the stain with cold water to allow you to blot up the now diluted urine. As above, sprinkle baking soda onto the area and vacuum after leaving overnight.

If this doesn’t work, it is because the urine has soaked through to the back of the carpet, underlay and floorboards below. At this stage you need to get yourself an enzymatic cleaner which will break down the uric acid crystals that have formed. Once you have targeted these odour-causing molecules you will be free of smelly carpet smells once and for all.

Dealing with carpet and rug odours can be frustrating, but with the right approach, you can enjoy a fresh and inviting home once again. Regular maintenance, DIY cleaning methods, and professional services when needed can help you keep your carpets and rugs smelling clean and looking beautiful.

Remember that patience and persistence are key to achieving the best results, and always follow safety precautions when using cleaning products with any harsh chemicals. With these tips in mind, you can say goodbye to unwanted smells and welcome a more pleasant living environment.
