How to make Valentine’s day special on a budget

Inside: How to make Valentine’s day special on a budget. Collaborative post.

For some, Valentine’s day is as overrated as the next supposed holiday, but for others, it is a time to really show their partner how much they are loved and valued. If you are looking to celebrate Valentine’s day this year but want to keep the budget small, then here are a few things that you may consider!

Date at home

Bringing your date night home is a great way to keep costs down this Valentine’s day. You could recreate your first date, have a cuddly movie night or even have a bit of friendly competition!

If you are a competitive couple then a cook-off could be a great idea. Set a theme for your date night and each pick a course to cook. You can even make decorations and dress up for dinner in line with your theme which will add some extra fun to your meal!

This is also a good idea if you are planning a double or group date – each couple could bring a course or dish which could then be rated if you want. If not, competition isn’t necessary for the date night to go smoothly so don’t worry!

Get personal

Personalisation is a brilliant way to make your partner feel special and you can look to DIY many gifts to give an even more unique feel while keeping to a smaller budget. For example, by grabbing an old jar and some post-it notes, you can create a truly heartfelt gift for your significant other.

On the paper, write things that would make them smile, from things that you love about them to little inside jokes that the two of you may share. Then, simply fold up the paper, place it into the jar and let your partner pick out one a day.

If you’d rather have something digital, putting together a playlist of some songs that remind you of them is completely free but comes with a lot of thought that is sure to make your partner feel special.

Alongside your DIY gift, why not add a personalised Valentine’s card, inside of which you can put down in words how much they mean to you?

Ignore tech

Forgoing technology for the day is a great way to reconnect with your partner in an age where we are all constantly staring at a screen and costs absolutely no money to do.

As such, this Valentine’s you may want to consider a fully tech-free date night. You could cook a meal together from a cookbook rather than an online food blog or spend your evening playing board games instead of watching TV.

You will likely be shocked at how much closer you feel with your partner when spending quality time together, rather than simply being in each other’s presence but on your phone.
