Inside: Benefits Of Indoor Physical Activities For Kids. Collaborative post.
If there is anything that the pandemic taught us is that your children may not always be able to perform all their physical activities outside. In addition, your child may not be able to access a park or play outside all the time due to lack of space, health reasons, or pollution.
This is why many parenting resources suggest indoor physical activities as an option for maintaining a healthy lifestyle for your kids. And it doesn’t need to be complicated. The best way to encourage physical activity in children is to make it fun. The more playful the activity, the more attractive it is to the child.
Types of Indoor Physical Activities
There are many indoor physical activities that you can do with your kids. They include:
- Dancing. This is a simple and fun way for your kids to exercise. All you need to do is put in their favorite music and let them dance.
- Table games. If you have the space, table games like ping pong, foosball, or table tennis will encourage your children to put in the work.
- Exercise videos. There are several kids’ exercise videos that you can use to encourage your kids to exercise. Most of them are structured and ideal for the kids.
- Scavenger hunt. This is another fun way to encourage your kids to move around. You can hide things all over the house and have them search for them.
- Video games. Many active video games encourage physical fitness, such as Just Dance, Fitness Boxing, and the Nintendo Switch Sports, which has a variety of games, including tennis, soccer, volleyball, and bowling.
- Trampoline. I know this is a scary option if you are afraid of accidents. However, you can make the trampoline shorter and smaller and the environment safe to avoid any accidents. For example, you can put in pillows or a mattress to soften a fall.
- Hide and seek. This is always an exciting game to play that requires minimal space and no equipment.
- Obstacle course. You can create an obstacle course using the things around you. You can have them crawling under the chairs, balancing on tables or
- Jump rope. All you will need for this activity is a jump rope. It is also a great option for solo play.
Benefits of Physical Activities
Maintains Physical Fitness
There are many benefits of physical activities for kids. Encouraging your child to exercise helps them keep fit, grow their muscles and bones, keep the heart, liver, kidneys, and lungs healthy, improve reflexes, and maintain a healthy weight. Physical exercise also helps reduce blood sugar and prevent childhood type 2 diabetes.
If a child participates in physical fitness, it will help them avoid being overweight or obese and potentially prevent weight-related problems. This is especially important for children who do not have the option of playing outside.
Enhances Creativity
Indoor physical activities encourage children to be creative. They will need to find solutions to any challenges they face as they play. It can also strengthen their imagination.
Improves Motor Skills
Games such as ping pong, foosball, table tennis, and ball throwing games are a great way to develop or improve hand-eye coordination and other fine and gross motor skills.
Promotes Brain Development
Indoor physical activities stimulate a child’s mind and actively promote brain development. Most, if not all, games require some level of critical thinking, focus, decision-making, and memory, which are all important for development.
Manages Stress and Anxiety
Physical exercise is excellent for relaxation and is a beautiful way to help a child keep fit mentally. Including fun games in a child’s indoor activities releases endorphins which help reduce stress and anxiety.
Socialization
Socialization begins at home, and indoor activities help children learn how to play and work with others. They learn how to be empathetic, share, how communicate, active listening, and conflict resolution. These are all skills that children need to maintain healthy relationships with other kids as well as promote family bonding.
Promotes Family Bonding
Spending time with your kids doing activities is a fantastic way to bond with them. You get to know who your kids really are and what they like, and they get to know you as well. You get a chance to learn how to communicate with each other and solve conflicts.
Safe
Having your children play indoors is a great way to keep them safe. Of course, you cannot completely ensure that there are no accidents, but the environment is safer compared to outside. Moreover, the kids are also protected from environmental elements such as rain and snow that can potentially cause weather-related illnesses such as the flu.
Fun
Indoor activities are generally fun. They help keep children entertained for a while and give you a chance to rest if you need to.
Even though we are encouraging indoor activities for children, these activities are not a replacement for spending time outside.
