Taking time for myself and finding my why | The Retreat 2018

I’ve made no secret of the fact that I have been more than a little lost this past year. I reached a low, reached out to you and you have held my hand all the way through.

Over the last few months I have slowly been making my way out of the darkness, rediscovering who I am and carving out a new pathway in my life.

I have lost weight, I have bought new clothes and I have started making time to look after myself more. All of these elements have helped massively and my self-confidence and self-appreciation have increased by the bucket load.

The only thing I haven’t made time for is for actual me time. Having a bath or going out to do the weekly shop totally doesn’t count and so when the opportunity came up to go to a bloggers retreat I knew I had to go.

Three whole days away on my own would be bliss – the last time I went away was for my hen-do in 2010!

So off I went, all the way down to Somerset for what promised to be an amazing trip. It was specific to bloggers and as well as being fed, watered and looked after, we would be learning various photography, film and writing skills.

My idea of heaven.

For a blogger, life can be pretty lonely. You don’t have colleagues or lunch breaks to chat with friends. Instead, you live a life of solitude, mixed in with an online world. So to be able to meet up with that world is an amazing thing – getting to spend a whole weekend away with those friends is even more amazing.

I didn’t take many photos while I was away – I was too busy relaxing! Thankfully, others had their cameras at the ready. Here are a few photos from my time away…

Taken by Monika (Mum on the Brink)

Taken by Vic (Verily Victoria Vocalises)

Both taken by Tom Arber as part of the beach photo walk.

Taken by Molly (Mother’s Always Right)

Taken by Helen (Actually Mummy) during Derek Lomas fashion shoot session. I am wearing a dress by No Logo Chic and will be writing more about that soon.

What did I take away from it all?

Besides some pretty awesome photography skills picked up along the way, I actually gained something far more important – clarity.

On the Sunday morning, as I sat looking out at the sunrise, I found my why, my reason for putting my life out there for everyone to see.

Being able to focus solely on myself, without any disruptions or distractions, gave me the time to figure out my purpose. Now I just need to focus all of my energies into that vision.

You will have to wait to see exactly, but I am excited for this new journey and I am excited to take you along with me for the ride.

If you are feeling lost, unsure of who you are or what you want to do with your life, I cannot tell you how important it is to take yourself away. It doesn’t have to be for a whole weekend, it doesn’t have to be to a retreat – you could simply book yourself into a spa for the day or go for a long walk by yourself.

The important thing is to find silence.

Allow yourself time to be silent, let your thoughts swirl around and settle in a way that will make total sense to you.

Find your why. Find what your purpose is in this world and don’t let anything stop you from achieving it.

For those of you who are a part of the blogging world, you need to get yourself a ticket to The Retreat when it runs again next year. I cannot tell you how much I loved it – I will 100% be going again given the chance.

When was the last time you went away on your own?

Thank you so so much to the Tots100 team for putting this together. It was awesome and I can’t wait for the next one!

  1. Sounds fabulous Katy. I’ve been struggling with my why surrounding a lot of Stuff recently but I am just completely stumped as to how to discover it. Silence is something I so rarely get (generally cos I fill it with all the other stuff or my head just goes completely blank). I am so glad you found yours and look forward to hearing more x

  2. I felt exactly like this Katy. It’s actually reassuring to know that so many people felt similarly. It was lovely to meet you and I can’t wait to see what you do as a result of it! xx

  3. Oh Katy this looks like bliss – time on your own, with bloggers, to reconnect and take time for yourself! Soul soothing at its best!
