Forget the to-do list, this will make you more organised

I am not sure when I became a list lover but with age has come an inability to hold on to too much information. Or perhaps it is just the fact I have more to think about compared to my 8 year old self.

Either way, I cannot live without my to-do list. It is literally my brain, on paper. And if I ever lose it? I have no idea what I am doing. Zero clue.

The problem with to-do lists though, is that they are never ending. Make an appointment, tidy the shed, drop off a parcel, decorate the spare room, order new uniform… the list just goes on and on. And on.

I don’t know about you, but I get overwhelmed really easily. And when I look at a list 20 items long I just panic and faff around trying to get it all done (translate to: make more lists and try to work out when I can do it all).

A new way of working…

A few months ago I stumbled upon a new idea. One that used my love of lists but made me feel more in control and more organised every day. Move over to-do and make room for must-do lists.

A must-do list is very short, doesn’t leave you feeling overwhelmed and makes you feel successful in the daily fight to get stuff done.

How does it work?

Grab your to-do list for me, I want you to order the items from most important to least important.

Here’s my example…

Once you’ve ordered them, write the list again in the correct order. This is your new Master List. Keep this list in a safe place, somewhere you can refer to every day to make your must-do list.

The next step is to take the top 3 items – they are your must-do items. No excuses, those three are important and need to be done today.

It sounds simple, but by sifting out the non-essential, least important jobs, your brain can focus and get the job done. Plus, when you get to the end of the must-do list, your brain gets a sense of satisfaction at having ticked everything off.

I sit down and make a must-do list every morning and it keeps me focused for the day.

    I need to give this a try, you’re right you look at a list 10+ items and its scary – I initially think I’m never going to get all that done, by breaking it down will make it seem much more doable!
