Bamboo from Bambini & Me

Have You Tried Wearing Bamboo?

If you had asked me a few years ago whether I had ever heard of bamboo being used to make clothing I would have given you a very strange look indeed. Seems a bit odd doesn’t it? But actually being a cloth nappy mama I soon found out that bamboo is a fantastic product with so many uses. I hadn’t heard of it being used for anything other than nappies though, so when Bambini And Me got in touch about their eco-friendly bamboo products I was very interested to hear more.

bambini and me breast pads

They very kindly sent Wills a gorgeous vest and some reusable breastpads for me. I don’t know about you but those awful disposable pads really irritate my skin and so I only ever use reusable pads now.

Bamboo is excellent at absorbing moisture (hence its use in cloth nappies and other reusable products) and is therefore the perfect material for baby clothes too. Their skin is so delicate and easily irritated, so dressing them in something that will quickly absorb moisture is ideal.

Bambini and me vest

Isn’t the bunny design cute? I love the colour too, I really like soft pastels for a baby – it somehow keeps them looking like a baby if that makes sense?

For the eco-conscious, it is great to know that bamboo grows at such a rate that it means it is a completely sustainable resource. Two other awesome properties include it being anti-bacterial and that it is more breathable than cotton. The anti-bacterial properties are great for the breast pads of course and being more breathable than cotton is great for everyone! Their clothes go up to 18 months so I will definitely be getting a few rompers for the summer months and I have my eye on their adorable shoes too!

Have you ever tried bamboo?

I do love that vest Katy! I had some bamboo breast pads with R but found them ridiculously bulky compared to the ultra thin lansinoh ones – what do you think about these ones you’ve tried, do they bunch up and become uncomfortable? I’d be interested to try some different reusable ones with the new baby xxx

They don’t bunch up at all, I have a couple of other breast pads that seem to go a bit hard (I guess where the milk dries) but these ones stay soft all day x

I first discovered bamboo when pregnant with my son, who is now 4. I was initially won over by the fact that it is, by nature, organic because bamboo will not tolerate any pesticides whilst growing. Also it is naturally antibacterial. I saved up and bought him some bamboo clothes, bamboo sheets for his moses basket and bamboo reusable nappies. Since then I always buy bamboo when I can and we have had toothbrushes, bowls, spoons, teethers and goodness knows what else!

Over the past 5 years I have also realised that bamboo products are great quality: the homewares like bowls and spoons are warm and tactile and great for little ones, and bamboo fabrics are soft but hard-wearing. It isn’t the cheapest material to buy but now I understand why (it can’t be grown in bulk with pesticides) and, although I have had to be frugal and save up for what we have, 5 years on and 8 months pregnant with our second baby I still have all our bamboo baby stuff for her to use so it has been a sound investment. We never had any swaddles though, and it would be lovely for her to have a little bit of new bamboo of her own!
