How to step up your cleaning routine

I’ll let you into a little secret…

I hate cleaning.

I would much rather be slobbing on the sofa watching Netflix, than doing the household chores. Wouldn’t you?

I always thought that people with clean, tidy homes must spend their lives doing housework. Right?

Wrong.

People with clean, tidy homes actually just have great routines that get the job done quickly – meaning more time for down-time.

Isn’t that what we all want?

So how can we spend less time cleaning too?

First of all, you need to accept that housework is a part of life. I know that sounds ridiculous but I will admit I have been fighting that fact for the best part of 20 years.

And my house has been a state for most of that time…

Once you’re on board with that fact, we can get started!

So the first thing you need is a routine. I have mine printed out in my control journal and I’ve made one for you too…

I do most of my daily routine in the first hour that I am awake so that the kids don’t get in my way. And yes, it does mean having to get up before them – but if it means the rest of your day is your own, it is totally worth it!

I have been filming my daily routines, so pop over to my Youtube channel to and keep and eye out for more printables coming soon!

So next are the tools of the trade. You can’t clean your home if you don’t have the right tools for the job, can you?

There are just a few things you need to keep your home spick and span.

Cleaning cloths – pink for the sink and blue for the loo

I use 2 different coloured cloths as it means germs aren’t transferred from one place to another.

Disinfectant spray

My latest obsession is Zoflora – honestly, if you haven’t tried it yet, you really must!

Duster & Mop

I have this cleaning set from Beldray and it is so handy. It comes with a chenille duster, window cleaner, microfibre flat mop and telescopic handle for those hard to reach places.

Vacuum

This is my least favourite job but thankfully my new vacuum has taken care of it for me. I also have a handheld vacuum for hard to reach areas and for cleaning out the car.

Compact clothes airer

I love that it has extenders so you can hang shirts on hangers easily.

Whether you have a tumble drier or not, you need a clothes airer, don’t you? I love this compact airer as it takes up hardly any space but fits a whole load of washing! Saves space and stops my house looking like a launderette!

Once you have your tools and your morning routine printed, you are good to go. I have put my routine into practice over the last few months and I now barely spend any time cleaning and my house is ready for visitors should they arrive unexpectedly.

I still don’t like cleaning, but now I get to have a clean house and watch Netflix! Win!

I have a Beldray cleaning set to give away to one lucky winner, all you have to do is complete the widget below. Good luck!

  1. I’m on my own now with only 2 cats. There are certain things I do every day, like clean the litter tray & wash the dishes. The other things I do as and when. I find just running the hoover round makes the house look much better even if the other chores haven’t been done.

  2. No i wish i did. im on my own with 3 children. i work too. i do everything and some days i get nothing done as im that tired

  3. I hoover, wash down work tops, clean the bathroom, do washing and tidying every day. I polish the dining table, mop the kitchen floor and iron every other day. I dust once a week and polish kitchen units/bar stools 2-3 times a week.

  4. No,no routine to it just do it when needed, the kitchen surfaces get cleaned the most though because they are done after every meal has been prepared.

  5. i have a tidy every day and hoover regulaly also mop regulary everynight i wipe down the kitchen sides with anti bac spray ready for food prep the next day

  6. To be honest, I have no routine, it’s when things begin to look like a Tracy Emin exhibit I know it’s time to clean.

  7. I get the whole family involved in the cleaning. I think it is important to share the jobs, but also to teach the kids it’s not that bad just jobs that need doing.

  8. I have no routines in place at all! I’m absolutely drowning in mess and clutter and I’ve been observing vicariously through the Facebook group. But I’ve decided enough is enough!!
I’ve signed up for the email and from today I’m going to do SOMETHING every day!!
And then hopefully I’ll get somewhere. Your YouTube videos have given me a huge boost of inspiration this morning and I’ve started putting things into action! 😀

  9. i try to clean room by room and end up in the kitchen last works for me,wonderful selection of cleaning goodies in the giveaway

  10. Sweep floors everyday with a brush- Hoover on weekend. a wipe down of surfaces. Including cooker. Washing goes on. Dishes. Light dusting etc..Mop on an evening so no feet on wet floors. Clean the the sink and toilet on an evening so bleaches can actually have a chance to work before someone comes in and flushes the loo. Then on weekends proper clean top to bottom

  11. yes I always try to clean the kitchen everyday and the bathroom is also given a once over the rest gets done as and when I have the energy.

  12. I feed the dog and clean the kitchen cupboard and my partner cleans the garden and does the dishes 🙂 its a good routine!!

  13. No real routine – I have to do most of my cleaning on a weekend so I tend to put some music on and get it done as quick as I can!

  14. My cleaning routine is do all the daily chores as you would do, bedrooms hoovered every couple of days, have a declutter every few weeks!

  15. We have cats and a litter tray in the house so we really have to stay on top of it! Sweep the area at least twice a day for any stray litter

  16. Tidy every day and do big jobs once a week house nice and tidy until teenagers and partner get home. Then I think why do I bother grrr

  17. I think I need a routine to make my life easier… I tend to make sure my kitchen is clean before I start anywhere else and dust before you hoover up 😊😊 Lovely prize, very useful 🙋🙋 Fingers and toes crossed x

  18. We have a chores list pinned up in the kitchen. As we are a family of 7, without it the house would look like a dumping ground in a few days if we didn’t have some sort of routine. I like the idea of different coloured clothes for the loo and the sink, I’ll pinch this idea. I’ve always used disposable cloths previously.

  19. Every morning after a shower I always dry my shower room and all of the surrounding panel, it is always shinning! I hoover every Sunday and Thursday and dust every 3rd day 🙂
Laundry day on a monday and friday 🙂

  20. Yes I like to use my mornings to get the whole house done, I start with the living room then work my way round. I always leave my windows till last.

  21. I do a little every day, although with the dogs I need to hoover the kitchen and lounge, which are side by side, every day.

  22. No I don’t have a routine, I wish I was more organised but at the moment I just clean what needs cleaning at that time!

  23. I’m more of a panic cleaner ..soneone says they are visiting I panic , throw everything in cupboards, brush everythibg under the rug blane it on the teenagers etc etc lol

  24. I don’t have a routine as such, more of a never ending task with 3 children a dog and a fiance. I usually deal with the kids floordrobes from the morning once they have gone to school then tackle the rest of the house. Nice fresh canvas for them to leave their marks on when they return lol.

  25. I empty the dishwasher first thing while the kids are drinking their milk – I find that helps keep the kitchen tidy all day as I can load it as I use things and I clean the surfaces and cooker top all the time. I also vacuum every day and try to clean the bathroom a few times a week. Dusting is rare for me, I hate it!

  26. 1 start at the top and work down and always do it when the kids are at school esp the twins! you can then throw things away , they never notice x

  27. Clean as we go in our house.Sadly as I now have MS my husband has taken over most of the chores and he does a really fantastic job without a word of complaint.
    #one in a million.

  28. I start at the top and work my way down otherwise dust falls on what I’ve just cleaned, and I use big car washing sponges to wash down worktops as it cleans them quicker.

  29. I try to iron the same day each week, hoover every 2 days sand put the washing on every morning if there’s a full load to go in

  30. I try and do little and often, I always do the kitchen and the washing daily but everything as and when I can fit it in

  31. I have a cleaner who does 2 hours per week so every weekend i ensure I do one big job such as cleaning the bedrooms, cleaning the oven or defrosting the freezer.

  32. I tend to do a lot of my chores as soon as I get back from dropping the kids off at school, the usual, emptying the dishwasher, putting a wash on and running a quick duster round and vacuuming, it really doesn’t take that long and I can enjoy a nice coffee when I’m finished, I find if I dont do it in the mornings it becomes a much bigger task as the day goes on so it really is worth getting it out of the way, the weekends are for the bigger cleans, bleaching the bathroom and disinfecting the kitchen floor etc whilst the other half keeps the kids entertained

  33. I tend to do one big job a week and generally just tidy as i go. And I always do a spring summer autumn and winter clear out and clean cos we gather so much rubbish.

  34. i do a little bit each day , the bulk of our cleaning is done on sundays… as we are all home and share out the work 🙂

  35. I feel like I am cleaning all day every day! I wish I had a routine but with young children they could be drawing on the walls as I’m changing a nappy!
