How To Bring Hygge Into Spring

One of my most popular posts at the moment is my post about hygge and the tips for creating a hyggelig lifestyle. The things is, many of the tips are more suited for the cold winter months and so aren’t particularly helpful as we move into spring.

Most people associate hygge with cosy winter nights, snuggled under a blanket. But actually you can embrace a hyggelig life all year round. I’ve been reading The Year of Living Danishly and have made so many mental notes around different things that I thought I’d share them with you.

Hygge - How to bring hygge into spring

The most important thing to understand about hygge is that it describes the feeling you get, not the surroundings as such that make it. So yes a warm blanket it is very hyggelig but it is the feeling it gives you which is important. So having that in the back of your mind will help you create more moments of a hygge nature.

How to bring hygge into spring

Here are 5 ways to continue the feeling that hygge brings you into spring, bringing you joy and contentment as we leave the colder months behind.

Light

Throw open the curtains, open the windows and doors and let the light in! That feeling you get when you smell springtime…. yep you want more of that! Use the arrival of spring to brighten up your home with lighter fabrics and colours – swapping heavier throws for lighter materials and treating yourself to some new spring-like cushions.

Declutter Your Home

Living a clutter free lifestyle is something truly embraced by the Danes and something we could all learn from. Very much like the philosophy brought to us by Marie Kondo, the Danes believe that to live a truly hyggelig lifestyle we must be free from things that do not bring us joy. So sort out your clothes, tidy out that ‘odds and ends‘ drawer and give everything a big spring clean – you’ll feel so much better for it!

Bring Nature In

Spring brings more flowers, so bring them into your home. Simple bouquets of daffodils or tulips dotted around will lift your mood and leave you feeling calm and connected to the natural world. Houseplants are also great natural air purifiers so embrace the greenery and buy some succulents or easy to maintain pot plants.

Continue Burning Candles

You may think that candles are more suited to the darker nights, but find yourself a fresh scented candle in a bright colour and you’ll find they will continue to bring that hygge feeling to your spring days. Scents of fresh linens, flowers or fruits are perfect for this time of year.

Get Yourself Outside

Winter walks are lovely but springtime means warmer temperatures and brighter days. The bluebells will be arriving soon which will make for a gorgeous Sunday walk with family. If you have a garden then get outside and give it a bit of a spruce – it is an extension of your home so by giving it some love you will be able to enjoy the view until those summer months when you can enjoy the space fully.

So there we have 5 simple ways to bring hygge through to spring, to allow you to continue embracing the Danish way of living. The Danes are listed as the happiest nation in Europe and since taking on board some of their ways of living I can totally understand why!

Have you embraced hygge yet?

  1. I love this and have really tried to embrace hygge during the winter. I’m SO ready for the lighter nights. I’m definitely going to take your tips on board – particularly the de-clutter bit. I was determined when both kids were at school all day this would get done but of course I always find something else to do. You’ve motivated me to do it this week! Thanks x

  2. I just finished reading “The Year of Living Danishly” and loved it. So much of it makes perfect sense, especially in today’s world. We have an empty room that I am in the process of turning into my Hygge room, so I love your suggestions with the change of seasons approaching quickly.

  3. Thanks for the tips, Katy. Additionally, how about a sparsely furnished bedroom, with the bed dressed in crisp, white, linens. Adding a small vase of fresh flowers and candle on the nightstand would also induce that hygge feeling.
